Xbox was delivered yesterday

So I won a Xbox on ebay and its gauranteed to work or my money back. I get home and plug everything in, but the DVD tray was stuck and wouldnt open... GRRRRRR so i googled that and there is a pin hole under the drive that will open it. After fiddling around with that it seems to be working in okay condition.. thank god. So I put in a couple of the games he sent me. One which was doom 3. Well for some reason, a annoying buzz is coming from the controller. It doesnt seem to effect gameplay or rumble or sensitivity but i am wondering about it. I tried 3 other games, and there is no buzzing coming from the controller. This is the "S controller".. is this normal or is the controller not working properly? Please help.. (this is my first xbox of any kind)

I just got an XBOX myself. I have one of those big "Duke" controllers. I haven't noticed any buzzing coming out of mine. If I was to hazard a guess, I'd guess that one of your rumble motors is buzzing.

A few questions for clarity:
Are you using an official Microsoft controller or a third-part look-alike?
Does the controller buzz when you play a music CD?
Does the controller buzz more or less during rumble?

Remember, a rumble motor is just a little electrical motor that is off-balance. Because they are designed off-balance, they experience more wear.

Have not tried it with a music CD. This is offical xbox (S controller). I tried the game with panzer dragoon orta, need for speed carbon and some midnight dub car game. They DO NOT buzz in those games. Just Doom 3. I wonder if there was supposed to be some "slight" rumble and instead of turning, its just buzzing?

Ill try the Music CD tonight see what happens. It appears the buzzing happens when there isnt any rumble during gameplay and I think it buzzed a little during a part when the rumble was very slight. But again, I only noticed this during Doom 3? What the heck? Anyone else have this game is there alot of "little" rumblings happening during the game (especially during the opening level)?

Tell you what; I'll go to the pawn shop after class today, and I'll see if they have a copy of Doom 3 for a reasonable price.

Do you get actual rumble in any of the games?

Yeah, I do get rumble. I am starting to think its when the rumble from the game is very very low and the controller may be a bit worn out so it doesnt quite spin it perhaps? But buzzes unless the controller is told to rumble at a certain speed. Im not sure.. maybe its normal for this controller? My DVD rom drive door doesn't open up either very good. Sometimes it works sometimes i have to stick a paper clip into the manual opening.

Although I have been keeping my ebay person updated, and he offers a return policy. But he offered me a $15 to just keep it. Soooooooooooo i probably will. I just need to figure out these 2 small issues. (although when i am able to get a game in it works fine!)

Based on my month of Xbox expertise, I'd say you got a worn out Xbox (and controller). I have two Controller S's and one fatboy, and I haven't noticed any buzzing like you're describing, though I also don't have Doom 3. I've mainly been using the newer Controller S, and the only games I've spent much time with are Panzer Dragoon Orta and Halo. (BTW, Halo rumbles like crazy. I got a blister under my wedding ring from holding the controller during a cutscene explosion.) If the seller said the Xbox was in good condition, then I think you'd be entitled to at least a partial refund, depending on how much you're willing to put up with.

well tried two controllers on doom 3 and they had the issue you describe. on my clear one looks like the right rumble is trying to move but buzzes instead.

This doesnt happen on other games so guess its a doom 3 issue.

Wow! Someone else see's that Doom 3 issue as well.. thanks for checking into that. Maybe its a game issue? And not really a controller problem?

Well I have almost 3 hours into Panzer Dragoon Orta... what a game! Love it! No buzzing on that game. That is the main reason I got the xbox. Now Ill get a hand full of the ones I would like to have but I do have a ps2 and ps3. So looking at racketboy's list of cheap games.

I think $15 (partial refund) seems reasonable to me.

I still think there might be a easy fix for the Xbox dvd door problem. But I may have to open it up...
