PS2 is 10 years old today

Post by J T »

Happy Birthday PS2!

The PS2 is my favorite console. I lusted after this thing when it was first released and I still love it all these years later. Remember when it was released and there was that parts shortage? Even if you could afford a new PS2, they were impossible to find. A friend of mine made some shady deal with a guy who worked at Target to get his. He was in the back storage area and the guy told him he would sell one of the ones on hold for an extra $100 bucks and he had to purchase 2 games and controllers too. Thankfully, my friend was rich.

He picked up SSX and Dynasty Warriors 2. I remember just going gaga over SSX as we swooshed down the slopes on his HUGE big screen television (rich, remember?). The graphics were so rich and the screen took up so much of our field of vision, it seemed like we were really snowboarding, only better because we were doing tricks that were impossible in real life. I was also really impressed that they got Rahzel to do voice work on the game. It combined my loves for underground hiphop and videogames, thus making the PS2 the coolest thing I had ever seen at the time.

Years later, I'm still picking up PS2 titles. I have over 250 titles and there are still more that I want. This system has some of the best RPGs, shmups, fighters, racing games, sandbox games, action games, puzzle games. I still have not purchased a PS3, Xbox 360, or a Wii because I can't justify the cost of a new console when I still get so much entertainment from my PS2. Even though few new games come out for the PS2 anymore, Persona 4 was a real highlight a little over a year ago that was better than most of what was coming out on the big 3 current consoles. PS2s still hold a slice of the pie in console sales. I'm even still looking forward to at least one new release that comes out at the end of March (Sakura Wars).

So happy birthday PS2 and keep on kicking!

its hard to imagine that i've had a system that long, it just goes to show you how powerful the system is, TEN YEARS, and still games are being released...It will be a while before the 360 and other current gen consoles see their demise

Ah the PS2. Ive owned seven now. The first five were all within the first year of it coming out, bought them from stores that family, friends, or I worked at and sold them on Ebay or locally. The sixth was from a friend who broke it. Which it worked for a few months in pieces in a cardboard box. The seventh is currently with a buddy of mine so he can play GT4. For a console Ive made so much money off of, Ive never given it a proper amount of gametime.

I went to Walmart at 9 in the morning and was 3rd in line when I went to get my PS2.

I had bought Tekken Tag and Ridge Racer V from Software Etc a few weeks before release.

Now my PS2 resides next to My Konami Windy getting regular use out of Vertical Shmups on a daily basis.

However I play all my Hori games on my Jap PS3 60gb Backwards compatible.

I must of bought 500 games both USA and Import / Asian in my time and even a few PAL games to go along with it.

Truly a remarkable system with probally the deepest library of any console. We still play Tekken Tag and SSX till this day.

There were so many SNK ports on the console its basically a Neo Geo CD 2. The system also has a healthy ammount of Naomi / Dreamcast ports as well as Type X, G Net, and System246.

Most of Psikyo back catalogue is for sale on it.

Capcom has displayed probally the best use of the console with some of their games they have released.

For Arcade ports it is a console lovers dream.

It's hard to imagine the PS2 is ten years old at this point. I still play it regularly, and it still feels fresh to me. Some games even look better than some current-gen stuff.

If you look at the grand scope of what the PS2 can provide, it is pretty amazing. You have access to an entire PS1 library as well, along with tons of old-school game compilations. Who knew one little box could do so much in the long run?

It's crazy to think 10 years later, you can still buy a ps2 brand new. If the dreamcast did that, you could still buy a brand new one a couple months ago.
