Linux for PS2

Post by J T »

I just saw this disc in a used game rack for $10 bucks. I thought of buying it just because I had never seen it before, but I don't have a PS2 HD, so it's kind of pointless for me to own. Anyone know what it's good for? Emulating, perhaps?

Basically PS2 Linux was to make your PS2 a real computer running on linux penguin. I wanted to use this back then because I didn't have my own PC. it used Mozilla web browser. PS3 can also use linux OS's. PS2 was ahead of the current console because it was more than a gaming machine.

Homebrew on the PS2 was miniscule compared to the Dreamcast scene. The complexity of the hardware did not help at all.

In my experience, the Linux PS2 disc is quite rare. I've been looking for it for a while now; if you want to sell it; I'd be willing to buy it.

With the slim PS3, Sony removed the ability to use other OS's. Why? Your guess is as good as mine. Probably for the same reason they also wont install the software to let their machines be backwards compatible.

Sony....such an illogical company

The linux disc for PS2 was created for the sole purpose of putting the PS2 into a different class of device. Being classed as a computer as apposed to a gaming device/toy meant that Sony didn't have to pay as much tax on each console sold therefore more profit for them.

you should buy it just for its rarity!! That thing is not easy/cheap to come by (if it's the real Sony one)

However, I have messed around with loading Linus on PS2 via homebrew methods, and it's a huge pain really. It's not really worth the time and effort as the PS2's hardware is a jerk.

Agree, I would grab it due to the rarity!

Even though you may never use it for anything.

Well fellas, I took your advice and I'm now the proud owner of Linux 1.0 for the PS2.

I'm not sure what I'm going to do with it. For the time it will just sit in my collection, shiny and rare. I'm not sure if I will keep it, find a harddrive+mouse+keyboard, or if I will just turn around and sell it for profit. But for now, it's probably the rarest thing in my collection, and it's fun just for that.
