RTS games no longuer appeal to me...

Talk about just about anything else that is non-gaming here, but keep it clean

RTS games no longuer appeal to me...

Post by Erik_Twice »

...because the scale is way too small.

Let's accept it, Starcraft and Warcraft 3 are the most played RTS in the world even though they are really old. Most new games copy their fast-paced squad-based style. Warhammer 40K, Company of Heroes, etc.

Unfortunatedly for me I'm a "builder". I like building bases and creating tank rushes. The only game that allows me to do that is Supreme Commander and it doesn't seem to have an active community anymore. Shame, I hope that changes with Supreme Commander 2 because I want to play a RTS that doesn't focus on two buildings and micromanagement like SC and WCIII.

So, who feels the same way?

Man, I love Company of Heroes. The graphics are stunning and I think the balance is really good.
I do love base building a lot as well, though, so Supreme Commander was a lot of fun to me but I just couldn't handle the scale. The largest map take most land units like 15 minutes to cross from one side to the other... And so many fronts of possible attack, I can't cover everything.
So Company of Heroes, even though you have very limited resources, is the most fun to me because of the straightforward approach.

I haven't played a Command & Conquer since Generals sucked so bad.

RTS needs a little more innovation for it to become balanced again. Deeper AI controls perhaps. Things like units that automatically go on patrol or move in to attack. I am looking forward to Supreme Commander 2.

I prefer Turn Based Strategy games myself. I think because I usually play strategy games as sort of a relaxer, so to me RTS is too "stressful" most of the time. Turn Based is like a game of chess. Take your time, think about your move.

I never really played too much of it, but I think Age of Empires might be right up your alley if you are a builder.

For those turn-based people - there is a DS Age of Empires game that is turn-based. Good quality. I think it's subtitled Age of Kings.

Ivo.

I haven't really liked RTS games for a long time, particularly because I've played with some folks who were good to the point that you either had to rush them at the start, or they would win. I also don't really care for the timesink required for one match, especially in titles like Empire Earth. 8 hours of teching up just to get killed and lose the match? No, thank you.

I play Dawn of War every so often. Emperor Battle for Dune is another I play from time to time, and that game still has a pretty active community.
