Good/Best "old school" controller for Xbox 360?

I'm looking for a controller with a great d-pad for playing Mega Man 9 and other new "retro" games on the 360. I _really_ want to have my top times and achievements for Mega Man 9 on my 360. On top of that it'd be nice to actually be able to play this game on my 360...right now I find the controller to be so horrible that I just can't stand it.

Also, are there any controllers that allow you to swap the start/select (back) buttons? I prefer to have weapon selection mapped to the start button instead of the select button. I don't know who the idiot at capcom is that thought assigning that function to the back button was a good idea but he should be shot. As far as I know there is no way to re-map the buttons through the game itself.

I guess the perfect solution for me would be a modded NES controller with start and select buttons swapped. Anyone have one of those for sale? ;)

Have you looked at the SFIV pads? I've been thinking about getting one of those myself.

Believe it or not, the rockband portable drum kit has a excellent d-pad and old school controller feel. I,d sell you my portable drumkit for $25.00 shipped if you can't find one. Its a great controller for old school games.

Yeah, Ars Technica did a review saying it's one of the best. Too bad you have to get some big useless thing attached to it.

The Hori EX Turbo pad back from a couple years back is supposed to be good.

I wouldn't put too much stock in the SF pads for platformers and arcade games. It's really just designed to work for SF. I have one and thought it might work with Pac-Man CE but it's rubbish with that game.

I still think Sega needs to release a retro-focus pad using the Dreamcast d-pad design and sell it in limited quantities online. People would buy something like that, no doubt.

Let us know if you find anything better...

All the cords are detachable leaving you with a nice, clean looking NES style controller. Add the fact that they can be found cheaply makes it easier to buy.

Edit: just got the joke. ha ha

Interesting, did not know about the portable drum kit. I've seen plenty of these for cheap since I think people either buy them and find they're defective and return, or find their rubbish as a drum controller and trade them back. I think I might look into buying one for cheap next time I go into town. I might even get away with trading the pads on ebay as spares/repairs and drive the cost down even more.

If you're in the UK Shopto.net had the SFIV pads for £25 (cheapest I've ever seen them in this country) but I don't know if they still have them, I bought one and it wouldn't let me buy another. God damn their one sale item per person policy!! Either that or I got the last one.

I wish Microsoft would enable USB HID controllers to work. I'd love to use one of those playsega controllers with my 360. Of course I could always gut a 360 controller and make my own frankontroller with an old Saturn pad.

I enjoy that Street Fighter IV gamepad quite a bit as it has a stong resemblance to the old Genesis 6 button controller which is my favorite controller of all time. The only thing I don't like is the fact that you have to push down harder than you would like on the diagonal directions on the d-pad to get tham to respond correctly.

Yeah I find it's much better for Street Fighter IV, I can actually play that game now. I still get owned online though... At least I can't blame the controller though.
