I got YLOD, what to do?
I got YLOD, what to do?
Yes, I got it. It was funny when it happened cause I was just as apathetic as usual. I didn't go nuts or anything. I actually opened the darn thing just to get the SF4 out of the blue ray drive. There wasn't really a whole lot of dust, so I guess it just died through usage and overheating from time to time. Does 5 hours every other day sound a lot to you? Well, i did own it for about 3 years. Alright, I guess I don't want to go through any trouble of fixing it, so I want to know if gamestop will still take an opened (warranty sticker off) ps3 ylod and how much will I get "now" for those who did do the trade in process just recently. I know consoles nowadays are kinda easy to break, but I didn't expect ps3 to be this bothersome. Well, I did pay about 700 dollars for the almighty PS3! (I am calmed....) So yea...how good is the slim?
Re: I got YLOD, what to do?
Buy a 360....But no... I like the slim very well. It seems to be very well built and i have not had any problems from mine yet. It is quiet and looks nice in my living room. It sucks that your going to lose the Backwards compatibility.

Re: I got YLOD, what to do?
I got the YLOD back in October and managed to fix it with no problems so far. It's a bit of a hassle because you have to obtain a heat gun, screwdrivers (although you probably have these), and some thermal compound, but it's not hard to actually do the repair, and I saved like $170 by not sending it to Sony.
Anyway, if you want to try it, check out the video tutorial. This is all I used.
Before that, you might do a few basic checks. Sounds like you already checked for dust. Some people recommend you try removing the hard drive and then putting it back in, and also try changing the power outlet you're using. But there's like a 90% chance it was an overheating problem. In which case, use that link.
Good luck!

I have no problem with the fix. I was thinking of repairing then trade it, but I also want to know if they still take in ylod ps3s.
Re: I got YLOD, what to do?
I've got to ask, why don't you guys just send it to Sony to be repaired? Whether its under warranty or not, I don't think they'd charge you more than $150.
Re: I got YLOD, what to do?
That sucks I have a 60GB with no issues yet "knock on wood". There are plenty of guides out there on how to fix this rather cheaply. You would pretty much fix the problem w/o having to buy a new console. I know when I traded in my 40GB for a 60GB I lost all of my patches, downloads, a lot of my saves and a lot of time getting it all back. It may just be a better idea to fix it if you have a lot of data on the HDD, trust me.

Sony raised the price not to long ago to $180.Cronson wrote:I've got to ask, why don't you guys just send it to Sony to be repaired? Whether its under warranty or not, I don't think they'd charge you more than $150.
If the greedy bastards built the console correctly this wouldn't be a issue. Its a shame the best, most feature rich version of the PS3 is cursed with this problem. As shitty as my 360 is at least Microsoft owned up to the problem.
Re: I got YLOD, what to do?
Paying Sony to fix a design flaw they caused? No thanks. Shit like this is why I don't have any current gen consoles. I know damn well my PC isn't going to have any overheating problems ever. Fuck Sony and Microsoft both for releasing defective consoles.

$150-$180 is pretty steep for a repair in my opinion. I can understand others wanting to do it themselves. $75 would be more reasonable.
