So I'm thinking of i.linking a few PS2's together.

Post by Mod_Man_Extreme »

Lately I've been fascinated by the PS2's i.link functionality so I need some help/opinions.

Has anyone here ever played the three-six screens GT3/GT4 setup?

How expensive are Official Sony cables usually running for?

Are i.link (AKA - Firewire) hubs common or cheap? Preferably the ones that actually say or are labeled that they were designed for the PS2. I like my stuff to match up and say it's for a particular machine even if generics or random parts will do.

Anyhow, can anybody help me out?

I''ll probably post up a thread in the BST section later on because if I decide to do this I'll need some more PS2's (Minty and in New or Near-New condition!) and cables/hubs to get everything connected!

EDIT: I'm looking to see how easy/reliable/well built hubs like this ( ) and this ( ) are along with anyplace that has them for a reasonable price.

It's a shame that most later PS2s don't have an iLink port. I gave my old PS2 to my friend as a gift, and got a new one, but with no iLink port. :(

Yeah, I love the 5000 series PS2's but none of them have i.link ports on them so I'll need to get some later 3000's and hope for the best.

Anybody have any experience with i.linking PS2's together and can offer any advice?

I've ilinked two PS2s together for some two-player, two-TV Gran Turismo action. It worked just fine.

How was it? Was there any lag or other issues?

A firewire hub will run you $30ish. I am unaware of a Playstation branded hub. There should be no lag when doing it, there wasnt when I did it last - GT3 was the only game I tried this way.

I was very tempted to do this a couple months ago but when I found out only a dozen or so titles supported it, and of them I only wanted to play were Gran Turismo 3/4 and Armored Core 2 I just decided to 86 it. A little too much work for something I wasnt really digging. Now if you could link Monster Hunter or any of the network capable games, I would have been all over that months ago.

I know that GT4 was one of the LAN link games, so it's compatible with any PS2 given that you have all the necessary network adapters and cables.

I'm probably going to do this anyway, though. From everything I've been seeing online it looks pretty cool, plus PS2's are cheap enough at the moment and I'm going to be running around with some disposable income next paycheck thanks to extra X-Mas hours.

Never any problems, never any lag. The only real problem was that you could only play the arcade side of the game, you couldn't i-link with bought/built cars in your garage.

Time Crisis 3 is easily, in my opinion, the best reason to get an i.link ps2 setup. The initial investment (or effort involved to find everything on the cheap) might be pretty big, but having an almost arcade 2-player setup would be awesome.

Pardon my ignorance, but can games designed for iLink use the LAN connector to achieve the same result?
