Good mousemats and good mouses.

Post by Erik_Twice »

I'm finally playing competitive TF2 and I seriously need a mousemat (I'm using a piece of paper right now) and a good mouse (Bcause mine sucks, and is discolored of so much use).

What should I look for? I'm a very "twicht" player so I guess a metalic mousemat is what I'm looking for.

The only mousepad I have is under my ADB mouse for my apple stuff. Everything else is optical and doesn't need a mousepad. I've always liked Logitech mice, but the wireless ones can be a little heavy because of the batteries.

Just find one that fits your hand comfortablly.

Your mouse is only so much for how well you play the game. I know one guy who is by far one of the greatest FPS gamers I have ever played with or against and he insisted on using a ball mouse for twitch games. I personally use the low end Logitech opticals. Mainly since they are cheap, last many years, and are easy to use with either hand. Which is important since I am left handed and all these new RTS games follow the damn Blizzard right click bullshit, so I play them left handed.

You might want a hard plastic mat, or at least one that has a special plastic surface. I've read reviews that metal mats are fairly 'draggy'. I'm using an Everglide Cyborg, but they don't make them anymore, wish I'd bought 2. It is still in good shape for being 5 or 6 years old, but then I'm not a crazy competitive FPS gamer. I wouldn't get a wireless mouse if you're gaming, just to eliminate any lag or battery concerns.

I have a gigantic mouse pad from Razer that I like, purely for being enormous (though Razer will say all kinds of other things about it as well). Razer also makes my favorite mouses, though anything accurate that can switch DPS settings on the fly should work wonders.

I've always hated the hard plastic mousepads. They don't grip the ball, and it tends to slide instead of rolling. The soft cloth mousepads with a thick layer of rubber underneath are the best.

Well if you're using a ball mouse yes then some plastic ones are no good. I should have specified for use with an optical mouse. Of course the cloth mousepads collect more dirt and the lint and dirt clog up the rollers. There are plastic ones with with a dull surface, ones with a really grainy surface, and ones like mine with a specific textured surfaces. Mine has a grid of what look like little raised craters or suckers. Mouse glides over it really well.

Ugh, I just looked, Everglide only makes cloth mats now?

Why do you need a mouse pad for an optical mouse? Do you have a glossy desktop or something?

If you're gaming or doing something requiring precision like image editing, some desk surfaces might be fine for tracking, but terrible for smooth mouse movement. A nice even mouse mat surface is a lot better. Plus you might not want to wear the surface of the desk, especially if you have a nice real wood desk.
