Zork Reviews: Marvel Superheroes vs Street Fighter (Saturn)

I have to say, I'm quite the fighting game nut. I have a particular fondness for Capcom games and Virtua Fighter mainly though. When I first played one of these Marvel VS games it was Marvel vs Capcom 2, I thought it was amazing. As time went by though I had found out that there were other ones that I didn't know about. Eventually I got to buy a few of them and play them.
Presentation
The game has that very typical yet welcomed Capcom Arcade aesthetic applied to it. The game looks and feels like an Arcade game, as it should…because it is one. Although as this is on the Saturn it feels natural unlike the Playstation version with it’s butchered gameplay, cut animations and sluggish load times. The game also has the obligatory options like adjusting speeds, difficulty and other things.
Score: 9 - Awesome
Gameplay
I feel that this game had reached the pinnicle of the VS Series gameplay in terms of balance. There weren’t any weird gems that would give you strange powers although I do like the concept in Marvel Super Heroes, there aren’t any random Assist Characters, and the roster isn’t horribly skewed to where the game will only really revolve around a handful of characters like in Marvel vs Capcom 2 at high level play, nearly every character is useful somehow. This game is just straight up tag Team Fighting like X-Men vs Street Fighter except with a better roster in my opinion.
Score: 10 – Amazing
Graphics
These graphics are still great in my view, with the fluid eye popping animation and vibrant colors…nothing really beats Capcom’s 32-Bit Sprites. A lot of the backgrounds in this game are also very colorful and active which I thought was great because sometimes in the earlier games no matter what series it seemed to be, the backgrounds were almost always usually pretty dull looking or inactive. This wasn’t quite the case in the VS Series but there were still a few backgrounds in certain games that weren’t all that impressive.
Score: 9 – Awesome
Sound
This game’s sound effects like most other Capcom games are top notch as usual. No complaints here. The Soundtrack however is very good, it’s one of personal favorites due to the remixes of Street Fighter character themes and they go well together with the Marvel themes which are usually very catchy or blood pumping.
Score: 9 – Awesome
Replay
This game will have plenty of shelf life if you have friends to play with, as do all good fighting games. This one may be picked as a personal favorite by your group though if you play it enough and like it due to the nice roster and less gimmicky fighting.
Score: 8 – Great
Overview
Marvel Superheroes vs Street Fighter is one of the strongest entries in the VS Series I think. It has all the right elements to create an instant classic that will be remembered for a long time due to it’s great roster, great graphics, memorable soundtrack and good times to be had playing with friends. I highly recommend this if you have a Saturn and a 4 In 1 Cart.
Score: 9.3 - Awesome
