I'm working on a project and, perhaps, an overall college thesis on video game art and "science" art (otherwise known as bioart and techart). I know of the several big-named artist and game designers out there, especially for the final fantasy series and whatnot, but it is difficult pinning down the teams and individuals behind the artwork, including in-game graphics and box art. I know most people generalize certain styles by saying, "Oh, that's a Resident Evil game," or the expressive water color style of Yoshitaka Amano for final fantasy. I can usually find the biography of more famous artists but only because they work on other projects such as manga illustrations.
It's like when you watch a movie and you say that it's great because of the director or actor, yet no one knows the names of the costume, make-up, and set designers- and I say this is true for *most* audiences, so no need to prove that you are "different" because you know so-and-so worked on something like Rodriguez's From Dusk Till Dawn... Anyway, my question is how would one go about finding this niche information?! And why should I?

Re: Retro Game Artists Research
The more recent issues of Nintendo power have interviews with various minds behind the games. I' sure some of them were involved in the art and graphics of the games...

Maybe try some art books for particular games of interest, they usually contain a little bit of artist information. Might be worth tracking down this book too. Can't thnk of much else.
