Actually, Ty the kickboxer is the easiest character to play as once you discover he has a 1-frame punch in this port. I abused the snot out of this when I beat Pit-Fighter on the SNES a few years back. Yes, it is possible to beat. You just have to cheese the game pretty bad to do it. I'd argue this is the worst SNES game I have ever played and would even rank it lower than the likes of Cliffhanger, Ultraman: Towards the Future, and Street Combat. It should be noted that the SNES version is considered the worst version of any port of the game too.

Oh, when you get around to Shaq Fu, keep in mind that the guys who developed it previously worked on Another World/Out of This World and Flashback. It helps to explain the controls.

I rented Out of the World (or which ever one was the Genesis version) as a kid. The graphics looked so alien. I never got very far, but it stuck with me years afterwards. There came a point when I didn't remember the name that I doubted it was even a real memory.

Like you, I rented the SNES version back when. I never got very far, either. But like you, it stuck with me.

A word of advice, if you ever wanted to check the game out again, the SNES and Genesis ports suck. The Sega CD port (included in Heart of the Alien) is pretty good though. Best bet these days though is the 20th Anniversary edition, which is available digitally on most current platforms (Xbox One, PS3 and 4, Wii U, GoG, Steam). The updated visuals look pretty nice.

A few years ago, I picked up the SNES cart for cheap and started playing it again. I was having an awful time. Then I scored the original DOS version and started playing it on my Win98 PC. Night and day difference. Aside from not looking as nice, the SNES and Genesis versions are REALLY choppy and the controls are very unresponsive. It makes playing it very difficult. I really like the music added in the SNES port, but it's just not worth playing because of the controls. The Sega CD version plays pretty smooth, pretty much exactly like the PC version.

Yeah I had a "Holy carp this DOES exist!" moment and picked up the SNES version some years ago. I knew about the SEGA CD two-pack though, and while I don't own it yet it is definitely on the wishlist.

Dude freaking nailed it! Awesome review for an awesome game!

Anymore more genesis in the line up, besides shining force 2?

Thanks strangenova. Alien Soldier, X-Men 2 and the Streets of Rage games are all stuff I want to get to soon.
