Re: What was the last movie you've seen?
^ I'm a big horror movie fan, but I never was a big fan of the Hellraiser movies. They seemed like they were just too over-the-top gory and torturous without any real story behind it to justify it. Same reason I'm not a Saw fan. I just don't enjoy "torture" movies; I like scary movies, monster movies, slasher movies, etc.

the first Hellraiser is a masterpiece. And it's not crazy over the top like the later ones. I find it offers a lot of subtle scary shit.BurningDoom wrote:^ I'm a big horror movie fan, but I never was a big fan of the Hellraiser movies. Re: What was the last movie you've seen?
i wish i would've seen hellraiser back when it came out. i would have probably loved it. back then it looked like a sci fi horror (hate sci fi) and just blew it off completely. saw it for the first time a couple years ago and liked it. of course i'm sure the shock value would have been greater if i would have seen it back then though.

I just don't get this. I can understand not liking chick flicks, horror, rom-coms, drama, documentaries, or whatever, But science fiction?stickem wrote:(hate sci fi)
How can someone not like sci-fi?
Sci-fi is like chicken, everyone loves chicken.

I absolutely adore sci-fi. My favorite film genre and book genre (outside of comics that is, which is often sci-fi influenced itself).indecks wrote:I just don't get this. But I can understand those that hate it. My wife is one of them. And it's not like she hasn't been exposed to enough of it living with me.

No, you hate Long John Silvers.noiseredux wrote:I hate sci-fi.
I found two free tickets to the theater in day 1 of my Advent calendar. What movie to see again? I think Wreck it Ralph as Skyfall would cut into too much football.

yeah nobody loves everything. I get that.BurningDoom wrote: I absolutely adore sci-fi. My favorite film genre and book genre (outside of comics that is, which is often sci-fi influenced itself).

Maybe hate is a strong word. There's a handful of sci-films I can enjoy and more that I can appreciate for what they are. A lot of Dick's stories for instance -- though he sort of grounds the outlandishness in some sort of reality.
But yeah majority of sci-fi just bores me.

And the second is the only time in the franchise where a sequel was better than the previous entries.noiseredux wrote:the first Hellraiser is a masterpiece. Lots of people hated the third, but in retrospect, it's the better of the post-HR2 sequels. When compared to HR2, it was shitty, but when you realize that HR4-9 were progressively worse than the one before it (HR3 > HR4 > HR5, etc, with the most recent being the absolutely WORST OF THE WORST OF THE WORST).
It's actually kinda sad that such a brilliant franchise as Hellraiser has actually devolved into str8-to-DVD hell.
But basically, if you do give the franchise a shot, start with HR1. Watch HR2 if you like HR1. HR3: Hell on Earth is optional, and if you like that then there's a good chance you might consider HR4: Bloodlines. HR5-8 are your standard "nothing better on/why the hell not/craving a shitty movie that borders on str8-to-DVD abortion" affair. And HR9 isn't worth the time.
