Well my "Year Challenge" is stalled at 1979. Turns out my top contenders are all two-players only. As I recall that was a bit of a trend back in the day. Don't program any computer AI and market the game as something to play with your friends.
Thankfully I found a "replacement" I can snag for cheap on eBay.

The issue is that she refuses to use anything but a Sega Master System controller so our gaming selections are limited.

I don't believe so. Google shows me a bunch of mods.
Not all 9-pin controllers have cross-compatibility. For instance, you can't use an Atari joystick on a TI-99/4A, which is annoying.
