Sorry but I don't believe it is genuine...
The guy was just posing. It isn't that hard to pretend to be dumb, and I find that much more plausible than the dude continuing following advice from that thread - AND posting about the outcome - for so long.

Still if it made some people laugh about misfortune, oh well.
If it was true I don't think it is funny anyway - think how much you can lose if you lose all your files (hopefully everyone here as backup). It's really a nightmare - all your digital pictures and so on. I don't think losing all your digital property (assuming the backups you have also go) is that much different from a house fire for example. But of course, some people would also laugh if some idiot set his house on fire, asked for advice to put it out, and got told to throw fuel on it...

I don't believe it's genuine either, but for a different reason. The whole deleting system32 thing is impossible to do on newer Windows OS's, and it had been going around 4chan for years before this thread. However, there really are very stupid people on that site.

I'd laugh if someone believed the advice that in order to make more money, they needed to place a curtain in the oven and turn it on broil, leading to their house burning down. Laughing at idiocy is the only way I can keep from weeping at just how dumb some in our species are.
