Re: Random Gaming Thoughts
But that's where I get confused- if it is Computer RPG, then there are quite a few out there who use that to identify any RPG on an electronic platform rather than tabletop. Including JRPGs and stuff that is pretty far removed from the stuff I was thinking of.

Re: Random Gaming Thoughts
It basically means "the type of RPG that you'd typically see on a computer" not literally "any RPG that is released on a computer."
Who uses the term CRPG for for console JRPGs? Please tell me you haven't been watching The RPG Fanatic on YouTube...

Re: Random Gaming Thoughts
The typical CRPG is often one that sticks close to pen-and-paper RPG design sensibility. That may be why you're thinking "classic." The term does originate in differentiating tabletop gaming from computer gaming but I don't think that's how people use it now.
Though what you could call a CRPG is open to debate and largely why people just stick to WRPG and JRPG when describing games in the genre these days.

Nope. Just going by what I found when I was trying to do some digging.BoneSnapDeez wrote:It basically means "the type of RPG that you'd typically see on a computer" not literally "any RPG that is released on a computer."

Re: Random Gaming Thoughts
See, I haven't heard this. I've always known CRPG to be RPGs for the computer (usually first-person or isometric) and JRPGs as the typical Japan-style console RPG. I've never seen the term WRPG before, because western-style RPGs are CRPGs.Gunstar Green wrote:The typical CRPG is often one that sticks close to pen-and-paper RPG design sensibility. I thought that...
...CRPG refers to the games that adhere to a ruleset, like DND/tabletop RPGs.
...JRPG refers to the Final Fantasy/Chrono Trigger/etc "Japanese" style RPG, replete with emo/zippers/one hero to save the world/etc.
...WRPG refers to the Mass Effect/Fallout/etc "Western" style RPG, replete with serious/dark/more realistic/guns/etc.

Re: Random Gaming Thoughts
Capcom does DLC on disc and everyone calls on their bullshit and make a scandal a about... netherrealm studios does this but they let you "try them" for free on the challenge tower and people are more than happy with it.

^ ...and that's why I think that the (X)RPG initialisms are dumb.

I'm still hoping the Steam controller comes out good. I'd like to have a controller that would actually be useful on PC games that are mouse-use heavy.

Re: Random Gaming Thoughts
I always thought the Fog in Body Harvest (N64) added to the creepy atmosphere of the game, now i realize it was just due to the N64 not being powerful enough. But seriously, the fog made the game seem more creepy to me, along with the depressing music in Body Harvest.
Damn all that fog in N64 games!

It was a great game, but suffered more fog than silent hill as you can see in this screenshot. I think it was pretty pioneering in the 3D sandbox genre and laid the foundations for DMA to go on and create GTA III as Rockstar.
That game spooked me a lot when I was younger, more because of the weirdly unpopulated setting than anything. That's why the N64 South Park game was so unwittingly terrifying
