I can't find the notes I took last night while watching THE KARATE KID and it is driving me crazy.
In short: It stands the test of time, ten fold. It may be even better now than when it was released. I wrote down everything that I had previously over looked, in detail. Shame on me for writing my notes on a scrap sheet of paper and not in my log.
Luckily, not all my short term memory is shot. A joke that I probably didn't get as a kid but made me belly laugh last night goes as follows (you have to see the shot in order to appreciate it):
Daniel: Where did all these cars come from?
Miyagi: De-TROIT!
That just sums up the brilliance of his character. We don't know if he meant that quip as a joke or not. Besides the scene where he has too much liquor, he's always out thinking and out smarting everyone. And there's actually not much karate in a movie called THE KARATE KID. Hard to put in words as this isn't quite a buddy movie, isn't quite a coming of age story, isn't a karate movie. THE KARATE KID is its own thing.
The film is directed by John G. Avildsen, the same genius who directed ROCKY. And although both movies have the premise of never backing down, they are nothing alike besides incredible performances and gripping stories.
If you haven't watched this in a couple of years, do yourself a favor and purchase it. It will keep you entertained for years.

I couldn't agree more. The film is arguably Chan's best role to date and really signals the arrival of a new breakout star in Jaden Smith. I am glad you found it as enjoyable as me, because I feel the film gets a lot of undue criticism. There's no way this could be improved upon, and it is leaps and bounds better than the original. The directing is better, the acting is award-worthy, and the soundtrack is, in a word, "kickin'" (PUN INTENDED LOL!).

I still have no idea why they changed the working title from Kung-Fu kid other than to cash in on the popularity of the franchise. Kung-Fu kid would have raked in the same amount of cash.
