Oh, maybe I was just tone deaf when it came to noticing that.
Don't worry...I didn't even realize that Flame Mammoth's stage had fire in it until the third time I played through the game. (It did always seem kind of wierd that his styage was covered in ice, however...) I guess I just always beat Chill Pengin first.

Same here. What a joke of a boss, btw. I don't mean to slag on the game, but when a boss literally just stands there (and friggin BLINKS at you) then it's time to reassess your standing in the MM boss pecking order. Come on, Chill Penguin, get your crap together.

Seriously, he needs to step up. Sigma may let that crap slide, but Dr. Wily would never settle for it.

Ha, I get it. Cuz his stage has the boots that let you slide, right? That was the reason I always fought him first.

I think the most LOL-worthy boss has to be Spark Mandrill though.

When you get the timing down Sting Chameleon is pretty hilariously easy as well. You get him into a recovery loop like how you used to do with Heat Man and Toad Man.

Spark Mandrill, Chill Penguin and Storm Eagle are all terrible bosses that would've been laughed out of Dr. Wily's quality control department. Sigma is the Buffalo Bills of Mega Man overlords, just bigtime tactical mistakes that shouldn't happen on a professional level.

Oh god, Chameleon is terrible. Tap left, shoot, tap right, shoot. Just a tad more difficult than Spark Mandrill.

With my route, Launch Octopus was the boss that always got a hit in on me. I fight him before Boomer though, so he keeps his arms. The roll takes care of most of his missles, but he usually hits me once before I take him down.

Yeah, with the X-Buster alone most of the bosses in the first X game are a joke. I always beat Chill Penguin first, as he's easily the biggest pushover. Then I usually go for either Flame Mammoth, who also might as well just stand there with a target painted on him, or Spark Mandrill, who is laughable once you have the ice blast. That said, all the bosses become absurdly easy once you've got the power they're weak to.

I love how quick and breezy most 2D Mario games are. This one is very gimmicky and it feels like I have to learn a new mechanic every level (though I admit I am still in World 1). I plan to see the game through, though I certainly can't foresee it becoming a favorite of mine.
Really you have to go in to the game with the mindset that it's not a Mario game and just its own original platformer with its own rules. One of the main disappointments I hear about this game is how un-Mario like it is and a lot of that is the fault of the branding.

Still, I have to admit it never clicked with me either. As I said earlier in this thread I never beat the game because I feel like it starts dragging and I lose interest.

Which is a shame because most of the elements of this game are really inspired. The graphics are great, the music is good but the gameplay is merely solid and not terribly compelling.

And I hate to make the tired old "Baby Mario is annoying" complaint but... Baby Mario is fucking annoying.

I plan to try and get through it again once the Retron 5 is out, if it ever is.
SNESdrunk wrote:So I cranked through Mega Man X tonight for the first time in ages, inspired by the earlier discussion in this thread. I've always maintained that X2 was better and that X was just pretty good... but I'm starting to re-think that.

I always felt they were both are kind of the same game with the first just being a little more polished innovative.

Their gameplay and difficulty has always been pretty equal to me. Liking one over the other mostly comes down to which games has your favorite levels and bosses.

The biggest change in X2 is probably the inclusion of the X Hunters which were kind of poorly implemented but you can choose to ignore them completely if you want so it's not a big deal.

It also has an incredibly lame final Sigma though I guess the wireframe looked cool at the time.

Speaking of cool little touches in the original Mega Man X, I love cutting off Flame Mammoth's trunk with the Boomerang Cutter.

You're talking about a guy who had Toad Man in his robot army.

Then again, that's what Wily gets for trusting in Russian engineering. Not his finest hour.
