I remember a few things from a previous play through to where I'm at but I seriously wish in some way they'd made it easier to tell where you should/can burn/explode things ha ha

Nope, the first one - just finished it today after a very frustrating playthrough. Don't be ashamed to use an online map or guide to get you from dungeon to dungeon because some of that shit is cryptic.darsparx wrote:I hope you're not referring to zelda 2 ha ha(seriously I think I've made myself want to play through the zelda games I have in yr order of release before zelda wii u comes out

I just keep dieing is the problem I suck at retro games especially ones on the nes apparently right now...wish I would've gave this thing more love when I was young even though we didn't have zelda that was my addition ha ha

Through all of this, I found out you can get nearly every single important item including the White Sword before entering the first dungeon. That will make the game crazy easier now

Re: Summer Games Challenge 2014
Just finished up Ys. Dark Fact was another bullshitty boss which makes that three terrible boss fights in one short game. What bugged me most was the lack of skill needed to beat him. You can just run and run in circles and eventually he'll fall, much like the rock monster boss. Really lame. The bat boss was the first time I wished the game had a dedicated attack button so I could position myself when he re-materialised and bop him on the head. Having to rush him meant half the time I didn't get a hit in and just walked straight through.
On the whole the game is pretty easy so these spikes in difficulty stand out all the more. I think the game would have benefited greatly from one more town and dungeon and less time spent in the tower of Darm. The tower itself wouldn't be so bad if it didn't make you backtrack as much as it does. That and the layout is confusing.
However, I did very much enjoy the game. Bumping off enemies was weird at first but you soon realise that it adds a tremendous pace to the gameplay. Darm tower aside, none of the dungeons are overly complicated or bogged down with boring puzzles. It's a lot of fun. The translation is excellent and brought the land of Esteria to life though its somewhat quirky and downtrodden citizens. That and the game doesn't overstay it's welcome. It's under ten hours and it feels like you want more. And the soundtrack! Glorious. There is some slightly cryptic stuff here but again no way near to the level of its contemporaries and it is usually obvious what to do next and where to go.
My frustration with some of the poorly designed and cheap bosses aside, Ys is a wonderfully fast paced and interesting action/rpg game and worth a play for whatever system.
Skies of Arcadia (DC)
Wonder Boy In Monster World (360)
Nights...Into Dreams (SS/360)
Viewtiful Joe (GC)
Super Mario Bros 3 (Snes)
Ys (PC)
Otogi 2 (xbox)
Rocket Knight Adventures (MD)
Golvellius (SMS)
Exhumed (SS)
Otogi 2 up next I think. Looking forward to it.
My Xbox crapped out earlier while playing Curse of Darkness so I think I'll move onto Exhumed until I can get it fixed.

Re: Summer Games Challenge 2014
Hate to be a double drag fool but this thread has gone a bit quiet. I feel like a school janitor cleaning up after everyone has gone home for the holidays.
I started up what is probably the most contentious inclusion to my list, Exhumed for the Saturn (Powerslave in the colonies). To my utter delight and surprise it's a really good FPS. I want to say it's like Jedi Knight: there is an awful lot of jumping to be done and the levels are quite large and three-dimensional in their scope. But it has flat sprites for enemies and key collecting like Doom, so it's somewhere in between those developments in FPS structure. Which is fitting for a game from 1996.
I was moaning a while ago in the FPS thread about how modern shooters generally stick to more linear level design so it's bizarrely refreshing to get lost again in an FPS level. The game also has a sort of Metroidvania-ish approach to level progression with new abilities learnt in one section opening up paths in others. I'm also digging the Egyptian setting. Gunning down Anubis demons and mummies makes it feel like a murderous Stargate game we never got.
What is also impressive is how fast and smooth it is running on the Saturn. Lobotomy were one of the few third-parties to get the saturn's ungainly 3D processing architecture as they show here and with their impressive port of Quake for the system.
I choose this game because it is cited as the best FPS on the saturn and the Saturn was the console it was designed for. I think the transparencies are better on the PS1 but there is more stuff in the Saturn port.

you still have no business playing Exhumed
