this is a total hipster bullshit thing to say, but i really did listen to chevelle before they blew up. a childhood friend of mine was really, really into christian hardcore and metal and somehow ended up with some promo cassettes and posters and t-shirts for them from Squint Entertainment before they hit it big. we got free tickets to ozzfest '99 and passed them out to everyone.

i still think they're okay. that first record was recorded by steve albini, which is kinda neat, i guess. probably explains why it sounds so much thinner than their later albums.

I didn't even know they were a Christian band.

kinda not true. they don't discuss their religion in the music. the way they put it was they are christians who happen to play in a band. it's not like p.o.d where there is a message, like them too btw.

"...Moreover, I inform you that although I have nothing against you except for how you have hurt me, I profusely reject metal. Why? Because the music is dark, violent, and dull and encourages young people to walk the path of sin and become increasingly enclosed in a melancholy reverie, melodramatic and pointless. I will not lie, I heard metal bands and have rejected them.

To give an example, I will mention Metallica. The singer, Hetfield, is mediocre and shouts excessively, completely lacking the melody with which I was born. And the guitarist only makes noise. Where is the music, then? Another band that I've also heard is Megadeth. I thought it was different, but I was wrong. The singer uses a vocal style that I dislike, like something that makes me feel like crying. And the other musicians in the band... I'd rather not give an opinion."
-Justin Bieber on hard rock/metal genre of music

"I have seen the need to respond to the insults received yesterday from Justin Bieber, since his words have hurt my pride for referring to my art and my music negatively. The truth is, I felt really bad last night when I learned this because with all my years in music, I don't know what to do. I honestly do not know that all my years in this career have been disqualified by inexperienced people moving masses in a way that does not please me.

Technically, I could have taken legal action. But I choose not to, due to the boy's age... I will not torment him with a legal procedure. My sources have informed me that [Dave] Mustaine [from Megadeth], who is in his own right, has decided to take legal action but I doubt he will continue. We know that Dave is temperamental, but he has a good heart and this boy knows not what he says.

I'm not criticizing my colleague for going as low as him, but the only thing I do wanna say is [for Bieber to] have respect, which is what he lacks. He should learn that a momentary and transitory success does not rewrite the history of music. I also want to say that he has a huge future ahead and should use discretion. Not for him to impose the market.[?]

What struck me, of course, is your criticism of my public, to whom I owe everything because they made me who I am. They helped me achieve the transformation from being a nobody to being James Hetfield from Metallica. You cannot classify them as depressed, melodramatic, and dark. By doing that, you are trying to say that our style of music influences them to feel hatred. In the end, you're completely disqualifying our [musical] style."

I guess I'm just a snob. Chevelle sounds like alt to me, wouldn't consider them hard rock.

As for your list, I enjoy Amon Amarth, Ensiferum, Black Sabbath, Children of Bodom, Dark Tranquility, Machine Head, (pre-Countdown to Extinction) Megadeth, (pre-Black Album) Metallica, Omnium Gatherum, Pantera, Wintersun, and Iron Maiden.

I am mostly into older death metal, but I also have a soft spot for a lot of thrash as that was my entry point into music.

edit: Not that I'm saying I'm 2hardcore, as when I'm not listening to death metal I'm listening to J-pop.

in contrast i tried to like death/black metal but as soon as the vocals start it's just a turnoff. something like enslaved i can handle. i can see where people love the shit, i just couldn't "connect" with it. to each their own though.

Watching the Revolver Golden Gods Awards is giving me a bit of a headache. I got on it to watch Metallica, but everything else has been really half ass and amateurish. Danzig sounded absolutely horrible, I don't know what was going on there. Old age? His vocals were really shit. (Not a huge fan either way, but come on.)

I will say that I was surprised watching the little segment on how many metal and hard rock musicians had died this year; seeing all of them listed together is kind of a hard hit to take at once.

EDIT: Just looked at BD's list. I can agree with most of it, and I'm happy to see someone else who admits to liking a metalcore band and hair bands. Although I don't like Cinderella.

I did too. I remember first hearing about Chevelle via the music video for Mia when it aired on 120 Minutes, I thought it was cool (both the song and video). In 2000, during a 4 state roadtrip with my grandparents, I heard Point #1 (the song) on some radio station and thought it was pretty damned awesome. I then forgot about them until I was in college and found out they did another record that, while still good, definitely was more mainstream and less indie.

One thing that did bug me about the album Point #1 (the album) was that the last two times I purchased the album, it wasn't the original version. I first bought the album when I was in college and saw that, in addition to Steve Albini, the album mentioned that there were songs that were mixed by Ben Grosse (namely the first 4 tracks). They sounded more cleaned up and...louder I guess? Anyway it bugged me because I enjoyed the original mixes more for it's rawness in sound. About a year or two later I bought a copy of Point #1 off of Amazon, and assumed it was the original version because on the back of the CD case (well the "front" because the "back" was the album cover, yeah the layout is messed up), it mentioned Steve Albini only, with no mention of Ben Grosse mixing the first 4 songs. Well, I was wrong. It was THAT version with the remixed songs. Just with no information telling you otherwise. I hate it when I get burned like that when buying a CD.

At least half of that list makes me want to gag, honestly. Out of the rest, I could count the bands I'd broadly consider among my own personal favorites on one hand.

But whatevs man like what you want.
