What was the last movie you've seen?

Talk about just about anything else that is non-gaming here, but keep it clean

Chris Walken is always Chris Walken. I wouldn't want him to be anyone else.

I think I remember seeing that trailer. And I think I decided to see it once I saw him come on screen.

I thought "what he did" was supposed to be acting...like something other than Johnny Depp.
Julia Roberts is always Julia Roberts, Bruce Willis is always Bruce Willis, Steve Carrell is always Steve Carrell, Michael Keaton is usually Michael Keaton unless he's a snowman... etc.

He found his niche.
Maybe I'm not getting what you're saying here. But it seems as if you're saying Johnny Depp plays the same guy in every movie.

Johnny Depp is far more versatile than that. Edward Scissorhands, Pirates of the Caribbean, Nightmare on Elm Street, Sweeney Todd, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Secret Window, Blow, Ed Wood, and on and on. Those movies and roles are VERY different from each other. Johnny Depp is one of the most versatile actors of our generation.

You need to see more (and better) movies.

In almost all of those roles he plays some very strange and/or very over-the-top kind of character, often in similar ways. Good acting is largely about character range, subtlety, and believability.

There's a reason he's never won an Oscar for best actor...and that even his Oscar nominations were in years with a relatively weak field (of which he was part) stacked against one phenomenal performance (Sean Penn in Mystic River, Jamie Foxx in Ray, and *squeal* Daniel Day Lewis in There Will Be Blood).

Depp is not - by any stretch - one of the best or most versatile actors of "our generation." He's probably not even top 50 in my book...

Watched The Road a week ago, it was the most "realistic" post-apocalyptic movie I've seen so far, which isn't saying much though.

COME ON.
I mentioned this a couple of weeks ago. Depp is part Native American, but I wonder how the Native American community as a whole will think about Depp playing Tonto.
It's funny how some one who has no connection to a particular culture what so ever can claim something like that because he's "1/64 cherokee". Isn't that sort of how Saint Patrick's Day was popularized in the US (lots of people with 1/x Irish ancestry)?
My WTB thread (Sega CD/Saturn games)
Also looking to buy: Ys III (TG-16 CD), Shadowrun (Genesis) Hori N64 mini pad and Slayer (3DO) in long box/just the long box

I absolutely disagree with everything you just said. Johnny Depp is amazing actor.

That's moot to boot.

Dish never said he wasn't amazing in some roles, he argued that Depp isn't versatile. Seven years ago I would have called nonsense, but er ah these days Depp hasn't shown much versatility.

I'll give him a fair shake with his role as Tonto. Depp does have the quality of acting where once in a while you ask yourself "Now where the hell did that come from?!".

So to become a broken record, Depp knows what is safe and he plays it safe which is safe for those who cast him.

And his acting aside, again, his business decisions have been nothing short of a pipe dream come true. How I would love to go to a board meeting and demand a higher salary for the rest of my life with producing the exact same results.

All of those movie roles I mentioned in my first post show Depp's versatility. Yes, many of them are indeed strange characters. But they're all completely different characters and strange in their own completely different ways. Which just goes to prove how versatile he is to play such extremes.
