Why doesn't the boy like my meat pies?

I'd extend your timeline up to 1998 to include the best years of Fresh Prince, Seinfeld, King of the Hill, and The Simpsons.dsheinem wrote:.On a related note, I think there's a good argument to be made that sitcoms largely hit their creative peak in the period 1970-1990 or so. That's not to say that there hasn't been some good stuff since or that there wasn't good stuff beforehand, but the overall quality of the first twenty and most recent twenty years of TV sitcoms just really falls flat by comparison.

People watch "reality" tv to feel better about themselves and look down on others. There are exceptions of course, but the most watched reality shows are those based on miserable people.dsheinem wrote:It's bullying writ large, and I felt disgusted by it.
Fair on all points, which is probably a good reminder of why I never watch Reality TV anyway.Luke wrote:People watch "reality" tv to feel better about themselves and look down on others. And Honey Mama, or whatever her name is an awful parent. Loving, sure. Good parent? No.
Nutrition is definitely part of it, which ties into the bigger issue: a lack of discipline. Honey Boo Boo (I feel dumber just for typing that, so HBB from here on out) gets away with everything, if not rewarded for her bad behavior.dsheinem wrote: Fair on all points, which is probably a good reminder of why I never watch Reality TV anyway.
Why is she a bad mom? From episode 1 she seems a bit bumbling, but she was taking interest in her kids, trying to make ends meet, trying to ensure they were having a good time, etc. Is it just the nutrition thing?
I watched 4-5 episodes and enjoyed the show. I agree that I thought the family cared for each other and were interesting.dsheinem wrote:So I just watched the first episode of "Here Comes Honey Boo Boo" since I am going to be soon reading a student paper about the show and felt I should have a little bit of familiarity with it beyond South Park references.
You know what? The kid and her family are certainly very different and quirky, but I saw a genuinely loving and caring family and environment that would be the envy of many people who might choose to look down on them because of their perceived "backwardness".
