Finally finished RS6. It wasn't my first FPS, but it was my first Tactical FPS, which offers up a much different experience than just going in solo and shooting stuff. Careful planning, selecting the right gear for each team member, and issuing commands were things I'd never seen before in this genre. Really fun.

Vanquish - 11/26/2012

Vanquish was actually a very well done, fast paced 3rd person shooter. The acting was fairly bad and over the top and the story cheesy, but I found it to be very enjoyable gameplay wise. It kept me entertained for this point alone. I'll probably finish up Ivy the Kiwi? and then be on my way to start and play through Deus Ex: Human Revolution or Xenoblade Chronicles. Thoughts on which I should play first? I hear both are critically acclaimed.
I really like Vanquish, one of the "under the radar" games this gen. I am hoping Binary Domain has a similar polish as I am on tap to get that in before the year is out.

As for your choices, I couldn't get into DE:HR or Xenoblade despite sinking several hours into each...but if forced to pick I'd go with the latter.
I'd say go with DE:HR personally. Xenoblade is such a chore to play. Shows how much critical acclaim is worth these days

I got the almost-best ending: Ethan rescued Shaun and gets together with Madison, but I lost Norman in the junkyard scene. I really didn't expect Shelby to be the killer; in fact, until he was revealed to be so I was convinced Ethan was. I also didn't expect to rescue Shaun, since I didn't kill the drug dealer and took the "poison."
The fact that I was kept off-guard right until the very end just goes to show how well-made this game is. Unfortunately, the way the story played out for me is now the way that feels real, so even though there's outcomes I haven't seen they would feel fake if I went back and did things differently.

I hear Heavy Rain was made by the same guy who did Indigo Prophesy. I should check that one out.
yes! Heavy Rain rules. Quantic Dreams did indeed make Indigo Prophecy as well as Omikron The Nomad Soul. :)

You make a good point about how the first time you play it becomes THEE story. I hadn't thought about it before, but I agree. It's such an engaging story that you become attached to it the way you experienced it.
For me, there was only one way to play Heavy Rain, the best way. I think I would turn the game off any time things went south so I could play through that section again. I'm just too much of a perfectionist. That whole live with the consequences of your actions thing. Screw that! That's why I'm playing a video game! So I have the control to make things go MY way.

So I beat the game on my one and only playthrough with the best ending. Have to say, even the best ending has a sad note to it for one of the characters. No matter how you play through Heavy Rain, one or more people are gonna get screwed.

Heavy Rain is an Uncharted kind of game for me. I had a lot of fun watching it (watched my friend marathon the whole thing when it was new one weekend), but I don't think I'll ever bother to play it myself. I'm not sure what that says about me or the game.

that's weird dude... it's almost the opposite of the point of the game.

Just finished Shadow Blasters on Sega Genesis.

It's kind of a slow-ish paced action-platformer. More of a Shinobi than a Mario.

You switch between four characters, though there's little difference between any of them. You can change characters at any time and are forced to change when you lose a life.

The game should be hard, but it's easy to exploit the infinite continues.

The final boss gave me a real tough time, until I figured out a (glitched?) way to beat him without taking any damage.

A fun game overall, but not something I'll play again anytime soon.

Yup, this game definitely stole the crown as "Best Open World Game" from Vice City for me. Everything about the game is excellent and utterly ridiculous. The PC version is also excellent, and quite pretty with everything turned up to max in DX11 mode. Took me about 10 hours to get through the campaign. Definitely worth the $12.50 I spent.

Edit!: New Super Mario Bros. U

I don't have much to say about it. It was good fun, and definitely the best in the "New" series.

3 more games beat in fairly short succession in the last few days. My current total this year is the highest I've achieved in any year since I started tracking with these threads. I'm about done for the year though, I don't expect to beat too many more before the year is out.

Sam and Max Hit the Road was frankly a bit disappointing. I adore the Telltale Sam & Max games and I have enjoyed a lot of LucasArts adventures recently, but this one turned out to be a bit weak in my opinion. A lot of puzzle solutions, whilst funny, weren't really that obvious, and I had to use a guide far more often than I would have wanted to. One bad example was a time when I needed to use a rope to pull something. After managing to latch the rope (an annoyingly arbitrary thing as is), I then needed to pull on the (very long) rope to get the item it was attached to. So I tried 'Use rope'. No luck. Next I tried 'Pick Up Rope' assuming I could walk away with it to pull it, or at least tie it to my car I could see in the distance and use that to pull it. Nope. The solution? Use Max on Rope. Wha? What this did was tie the rope to max, threw him to the car, and then caught up with him and used the car door to pull it. My solution was basically the same, but because it was less funny, it didnt work. It wasn't all a miss though, it was funny (though not as much as the Telltale ones) and the music was great. Sam and Max were likeable, although admittedly more violent and mean-spirited than the Telltale incarnation. I just put this down to their characters developing over the years though. The worst LucasArts game I've played for sure, but still a decent game.

Mega Man: Dr. Wily's Revenge for Game Boy was a game that I started out disliking but warmed to more over time. The levels are nicely designed for the most part, but one or two of the 6 stages had some mean instant kill spikes which were basically down to luck to avoid unless you knew where they were due to plenty of leaps of faith. It was a bit short, with only 4 robot master stages and 2 wily stages, but the weapon variety wasnt too bad, as 4 extra robot masters appear in the wily stages and give you their weapons too. MegaMan's greatest enemy in this game isn't Wily, Elecman or Quick Man though, it's the nefarious Treacle Man, who has coated all the platforms in his horrible sticky syrup, making MegaMan move as slow as molasses. Seriously, I had to fullscreen this game on my GBA just to give the impression MegaMan was moving at a slightly more bearable speed. The game also has plenty of slowdown making it slow to an outright crawl. Overall, it's certainly not a good game. Tolerable is perhaps more appropriate, perhaps even decent. I wouldn't recommend it though. That said, don't give up on Mega Man on GB, as Mega Man III, which I also own, is much better than this.

F-Zero GP Legend is the 2nd F-Zero on GBA, and the last of the GBA games to arrive in the west. Compared to it's predecessor Maximum Velocity, it is much more fully featured and contains more depth. The game includes a reasonably lengthed story mode and 48 time trial missions in addition to the usual cups, plus lots of unlockable racers and a few unlockable tracks. It also adds some features from F-Zero X and GX, such as attacking the opponent, and using the health bar for boosting. This makes for a far more interesting risk and reward mechanic than MV's one boost per lap. The story mode is a bit simple, and quite short, but enjoyable nonetheless. It forces you to use 8 different characters, so you get to try out more than just Cpt. Falcon's racer for a change. Missions include simple 'win the race' with a few more complicated ones like 'destroy the other racer' or 'win without boosting'. The story also fleshes out the F-Zero universe much better than the similarly bad story mode in GX, and is much less brutal to boot. The game's graphics are nothing to right home about, but it's fast and smooth, and the music is pretty awesome, if a little quick to loop. My favourite is the track that appears on the Lightning stage, which just suggests something epic. As far as 2D F-Zero goes, this is the best one I've played. Still not as good as X or GX, but a solid third place. I'd be interesting in trying F-Zero Climax though to see if it's improved. As a side note, I've heard this game was based on the F-Zero anime, but besides a few new main characters in story mode, there's not really much that this changes. It's nice to see it doesnt add loads of unnecessary pap to the game. Definitely worth picking up, probably the best racer on GBA.

Continuing my Megaman marathon... yep, MM3 is still probably my top favorite and I still love MM4 more than most I guess, working on that one now. You just can't go wrong with the first six games at all, love them all. Might stop at 6 and jump to 9-10, but I do kind of want to revisit 7 and 8... I could see 7 being a decent game, like X5-X6. Flawed, but not a "bad" game. I don't remember loving it or 8 though.

I really wish the Anniversary Collection included Megaman & Bass, I'd put that game WAY above 7/8.

And no I've never touched X7 and never will. Beat X8 once and I'm done for life with that one too.

Been playing Megaman and Bass recently, it's awesome. Might be my favorite Megaman game. I'd play the SNES version over the GBA though.
