Games Beaten: 2013 2012 2011 2010

I was impressed by the expansion - the campaign (which is my primary interest in playing) was a solid 8-9 hours for me, which is much longer than a standard act in the main game (they were more like 5-6 hours each when I played it around launch). I thought the revisions to the engine/systems were good, too - everything felt a bit more streamlined and useful than what I remember from last playing the game a year or so ago.

I can't speak to the new class - I may try them out if/when I play through the game again at some point, but we shall see. For me, running through some new areas and seeing the story continue was enough.

No clue how I only have 98% complete on Super Mario World and not 100%. That 2% has eluded me for some time now. I've looked at online maps to see if I have missed a level, but I can't find a level I haven't completed/found.

Super R*Type ismore difficult than the original, and I claim fame to have beaten it without cheats. Well, that is if you don't count pausing the game once in a while to form a strategy as cheating. I play the game as much for the music as much as I do for the actual game. It's sooo snes sounding.

I have to admit it; I'm not that good at Final Fight. But! Once in a while I straight up school that game. A few days ago, that was one of those times. Haggar for life.

Wait isn't a perfect file on Super Mario World ★96? I didn't think they used a percentage or that it was possible to get a "98."

I think it's also based on exits found, not levels completed. Perhaps a subtle difference.

I might have an 96% instead of an 98% (I did play it while outdoors). Both save files definitely don't have a 100% though, that I know for sure.

I even made sure to find every secret path, especially in the hidden/mystery forest zone.

I looked it up.

It's not a percentage, it's a literal number. There are 96 exits, 96 is the perfect file.

I think you're good dawg.

I thought if the world changed colors, that means you have all 96 exits?

I'm still not playing PS3 and Wii games because the shared PS3 is connected to an unbearable TV. I've seriously considered getting my own PS3, but I'd rather put that money towards a new PC...or rent.

Games beaten 2014:

Bust A Move: Universe (3DS)
Recommended: No.
An American-made Bust A Move, somehow. It turned out pretty well - I like the simplified rules since they allowed a greater focus on puzzle design. Or should have. I beat all the maps in an hour or so, and any challenge is in getting high scores. Lame soundtrack, low difficulty, very short compared to other Bust A Move games.
Hotline Miami (PSV)
Recommended: Yes
Everything about this game was fun. I enjoyed every mission. Controls were interesting on PSV, I wonder how lock-on worked for the PS3 version.
Text: A Summer Story (PC)
Recommended: Yes
Freeware visual novel for PC. You can see everything in about half an hour - a promising ghost story devolves into nonsense. I must praise the cell phone mechanic - your decisions influence whether or not your phone gets charged, and the characters' actions change based on what the protagonist knows.
Super Mario Land 2: 6 Golden Coins (Game Boy)
Recommended: Yes
Lots of inventive ideas in this game and mind-blowing for the Game Boy hardware. Looks and sounds great on my Game Boy Pocket. The main draw is the surreal levels, which range from "outer space" to "giant lego castle." I beat it in one sitting without dying, so it's easy to recommend to those short on time.
Shinobi (3DS)
Recommended: Yes
prfsnl_gmr wrote:It's like Shinobi III, Ninja Gaiden II, and Shadow of the Ninja stumbled into a darkened room during a crazy party at The Legend of Kage's house, and nine months later one of them gave birth to the best 2D ninja game in a decade.
I beat it on Hard mode and plan to play Very Hard soon. This game is a whole lot of fun and one of the top 3 games on 3DS, next to Fire Emblem and Kokuga. It's about an hour long if you don't die. You might get tired of playing the first 9 levels only to get killed by Orn, but it should only take a few tries. It was a fun challenge, but anyone should be able to win if they focus.
Senran Kagura: Skirting Shadows (3DS)
Recommended: Righteous Boobage
When I beat the game, I got these messages:
"You have unlocked a new outfit for the Hanzo Acadamy dressing room!
You have unlocked microphone mode for the Hanzo Academy dressing room! Try blowing in the Nintendo 3DS Microphone while trying on outfits!
You have unlocked Adjustable Camera mode for Costume Destruction scenes! Move the circle pad while your character's costume is being damaged to see...what?"

Skirting Shadows is a lame game with some awesome features. The cel shading and animation are great - and I'm not just talking about the breasts. The 3D work is the best I've ever seen. The music is alright, and I really liked the insert songs. The voice acting was fun, the characters were cute, each of the girls' unique play styles was fun to master.

I can't pick a favorite - just that Asuka is the least awesome. Ikaruga the kendoka, Katsune the fist fighter, and Yagyu (who fights with an umbrella that shoots fireballs) were all pretty fun at first.

Problem is the difficulty - there is none. Knock your enemies into the air, juggle them, crash into the ground, and repeat. I died only once - and that was when the last boss did his unexpected tail attack. The really sad thing is, if only the enemies were smarter. it could have been an awesome game.

You're either fighting one strong enemy or dozens of smaller ones. These attack infrequently but when they do, they're powerful. That doesn't matter though; there's health-restoring milk and free EXP hidden in crates. You get full health and ninja magic when you level up. It seems Marvelous wanted nothing to get between the player and his 3D breasts. The target audience - besides otaku - is 13 year old boys.

If only the crowds would take the initiative and try to surround you and pin you down, it could have been the most thought-provoking beat-em-up of all time. Group tactics vs. one powerful ninja. As it is, you can use the same move on them 50 times in a row.

Those visual novel sections were annoying too. The plot made no sense and it was really dumb thematically. Nothing to be said for them. They put a little more effort into the title. How clever.

It was pretty and novel. Can't say I regret the few hours I put into it, but I'm a bit worried about the $30. Should have bought a better game, or a creepy anime doll. Or kept it in the bank.

I'll recommend it as entertainment, but not as a video game.
Metal Slug - Arcade (MAME)
Recommended: Yes
Beat this with a friend yesterday. I did pretty well but he consumed 36 credits.

I've nothing to say about Metal Slug that hasn't been said.
Fate: Unlimited Codes - PS2
Recommended: Yes
Beat arcade mode on hard with Saber and Rin. Unfortunately I can't seem to progress in mission mode and unlock Saber Lily because I can't read Japanese.

Licensed anime fighting games are usually lame, but I liked this one a lot. The awesome art, music, and voice acting got me pumped right away, and I was already a fan of the characters. I feel like cavia did a great job capturing the feel of each fate character. They're all pretty fun to play as. Some have unique gauges - Rin gets 20 gems for magic attacks for example. While they're not all evenly matched, vs play is pretty fun.

It's a 3D fighter with controls very similar to Soul Edge. Light, med, heavy attacks, sidestep, block and a "reflect block" button that uses part of the EX gauge. It plays out very differently though. Since movement is slow and fairly limited, you need to zone your opponent very carefully. A mistake is less recoverable than fast games like Soulcalibur II. Since guard breaks and special moves use the same gauge, you have to be careful about using them. Attacks inputs are very simple. Two quarter circles and you've got EXUCARIBAAAAAH flying all over the screen.

It's awesome. The PSP version was released in English on PSN, but who wants to play fighters on a PSP...? I might end up buying it so I can play as Saber Lily.

When it turns to fall?

No, that just means you've completed the Special World.

I do this really early in the game - as soon as possible (once you get to World 2). I never see the "regular" versions of certain enemies because of this.

2. Magical Drop V (PC) - Puzzle
3. Reaching Out (Android) - Visual Novel
4. Nanolife (Android) - Visual Novel
5. Darius Burst (PSP) - Shmup
6. Ridge Racer 2 (PSP) - Racing
7. Darkstalkers Chronicle: The Chaos Tower (PSP) - Fighting
8. Street Fighter II: Special Champion Edition (Genesis) - Fighting
9. Street Fighter III: 3rd Strike Online Edition (PS3) - Fighting
10. Super Mario Bros. (NES) - Platformer

Thoughts:
Classic. Beat it in about 20 minutes (little rusty) and was on 8-3 of the second run when I got kidnapped by my drunk friends down the road. :? :D

Not much to say about the game that everyone doesn't already know, but I was struck that, after having my NES cooped up in the closet for so long and only playing on an emulator, there's a really noticable difference. Everything is just so much snappier and responsive running the real deal on a CRT than through Nestopia on an LCD (input lag is real guys :!: ).

Oh, and I still hate the trampolines.
