mario - snes via mario all stars

is it mario 3? super mario 3? mario bros 3? i have no idea the correct title of these two games. i know i could easily look them up online but fuck it. i'm sticking with what i have. i originally hooked up the snes to play r-type III, but i totally suck at shmups and could only get to the 3rd or 4th level.

i beat mario 3 from beginning to end, every level, and without the whistles. too bad mario 3 is easy as shit which doesn't make this much of an accomplishment. i think i ended up beating the game with 80+ lives. many of the levels are VERY short, which is something i don't think i ever noticed.

the original mario is great. the all stars version actually plays slightly different than the nes version.
if you took a shit, please put it back

1/15 Dynamite Cop (DC)
2/4 Castlevania: Lords of Shadow (PS3)
5/19 Portal 2 - Single Player (PS3)
5/22 Ys I: Ancient Ys Vanished (PSP)
6/5 Castlevania: Lords of Shadow: Reverie (PS3)

For fans of the game the new DLC is a must. Clocks in at around 1-2 hours of additional gameplay and the addtions to the story are sweet indeed. Loved it and I will be buying the next DLC when it comes out!

Thoughts on the Game(s)

This was such an amazing game, cyberpunk and adventuring at its best. If this was released during the 90's this game would have been completely and utterly massive. Everyone owes it to themselves to try this out, its get elements from all the best pieces of cyberpunk all strung together with an interesting and fairly deep story. The voice acting, the music, the graphical styling, I can honestly not find a fault in this little gem. It is on par with the likes of Monkey Island, Broken Sword and Beneath a Steel Sky.

HIGHLY SUGGESTED GAME.

well, my latest is another batch of good but not great games. AC:CF is fun, and as a fan of the series it had just enough new features to keep me playing, although if you've played the other two to death you can probably skip this one. the wi-fi voice chat was prob. my favorite addition.

i played etrian odyssey obsessively for the first few floors, but after the "difficulty" evened out i got really bored with the battle mechanics which is just the same turn-based RPG fodder we've already seen for decades now. the mapping gimmick is fun for a while but not enough to compensate, and the lack of characters or story meant i didn't have any other reasons to continue. one of the few games i couldn't bring myself to finish.

mario kart: super circuit is a perfectly respectable entry in the series, albeit limited by the GBA hardware. if you're a fan of the SNES-style gameplay you'll like it, and the inclusion of all the SNES tracks is a great bonus.

as usual, more extensive reviews can be found on my blog.

I love Curse, though the first two are by far better games. If not having voice is a problem there are even HD Remakes, both of which are pretty decent.

Total: 33

Just 2 new entries since last time.

Wonder Boy in Monster World was a pretty fun game, it played very well, and the design of the dungeons was pretty fun. It was a bit more linear than Wonder Boy III though, there was less need to go back to places with new abilities than before.

It had loads of little tributes to the earlier games in the series that I enjoyed too. There was a boss based on Monster Lair, a transform room straight out of Dragon's Trap, the infamous blocks that move when you jump off of them from Wonder Boy II, and even a boss who lost his heads over time, straight out of the original Wonder Boy/Adventure Island. As a bit of a fan of the series, I enjoyed all these little throwbacks. This was probably my 2nd favourite of the 4 I've played (Dragon's Trap > Monster World > Wonder Boy > Monster Land) although I have really enjoyed all 4. Just need to play Monster Lair (which is apparently awful) and Monster World IV (which is apparently awesome, and which I can;t wait to be released on VC) to finish the series now. I'm kinda sad that there'll be no new Wonder Boy games for me to play after that.

Final Fantasy III I really enjoyed, which surprised me, because I've tried playing through it a couple of other times and got bored quickly. This time though I found the pace brisk enough to keep me interested, the job system allowing me to change how I played when I got bored. Not being able to save in dungeons was annoying, there was one dungeon in particular I had to trek through 4 times because I kept dying on the boss. Luckily, I didn't die once in the final dungeon, because there were no save points there for a good 2 or 3 hours. Overall, I enjoyed this one, and it's now officially the first numbered Final Fantasy game that I've ever finished.

Next Up: Lots of stuff I want to play. Banjo Kazooie, Ghost Trick, Final Fantasy IX and Blazing Lasers are all on the list. So are gradius and parodius, but i cant see me beating them anytime soon

TOTAL: 23

I like shmups, but I'm terrible at them. Despite owning quite a few for the SNES, I've never actually managed to get through any of them. Sure, I get pretty far in UN Squadron and didn't do too terribly at Super Earth Defense Force, but I could just never make it to the end. So I'm happy to say that I finally made it all the way through Super R-Type...on Novice. Yeah, yeah, I know, I'm just glad I made it at all. I'll be trying again on the higher difficulties later.

Admittedly the slowdown helped. Super R-Type suffers from quite a bit of it at times. It also took me a while to realize just how useful the bits were. I didn't know that they served as shields until the final level, where they saved my butt innumerable times. The Spread Lasers were my favorite weapon of choice, though on certain levels I happily opted for the shotgun bomb. Is there a better choice that I should check out?

Hey, thanks. Truthfully I started this game about two months ago and didn't really care for it, and then after messing around with Castlevania 64 a bit, I decided I'd go back to it last week. I'm really glad I took the time to beat it, but it was a whole lot longer than I expected, which I suppose I should consider a bonus.

They kind of did this in both Mega Man X 6 and Mega Man X 7, but it was much, much more annoying in Mega Man X 6. Yet another reason why I liked MMX7 a bit more than its predecessor. MMX8 schools the both of them though

So could you ever get an upgrade that was lost if the robot was killed then?

You could in MM X 6, I'm not sure about MM X 7. Hard to remember. It's was a LOT harder to save those robots in MM X 6 though
