FreeVast and ESR have nothing to do with PS1 games. Just use a modded PS1 like I do. The swap tricks are just a hassle.

Is there any damage done by playing DVD+R's/CD-R's in the PS2? I have heard conflicting reports about this and am wondering if I should even bother trying to track down the right version of Action Replay to do this.

I have an older 1st gen fat PS2 that just doesn't like to read disks anymore so I just picked up the newest PS2 slim model (9000 series?) that came with Lego Batman and would hate for that one to go out on me too.

the newest slim i've checked this on is a SCPH-79001, it works fine. My older fat PS2 doesn't like to read back-ups but that doesn't matter since I've got a HDD in it anyway. Use good quality DVD-R's and you should be just fine. Or, do like I did, get a two year best buy warranty on the slim and TRY to burn the laser out by playing back-ups all the time. Mine is showing no signs of wear yet but i'm only 14 months in.

The laser burnout problem on some of the slim models is not caused by just backups. The lens units were faulty. All discs will do the same harm to it. The solution is to install a laser fix chip, which is just a stack of resistors, really.

didn't they fix this in versions 16 and up?

what versions are they up to?

The one I just got says model # SCPH-90001. I guess thats the newest version, a quick google tells me thats US version 18. Is there any problem with doing the freevast mod on this one?

All should work. FreeVast actually comes with a few dozen BIOS replacements, if you can call them that. Normally, it just detects which revision you have and uses that one, but if you install the "multi-version" of FreeMCBoot/FreeVast on a card, if actually retains all the BIOS replacements on that card, in a list, so that the card works on any version.
