Servers returned around 12:30 today, sooooooo I was able to play! I didn't stray too far out of my neighborhood today, and my Vaporeon was returned to me today (still the longest gym stint out of any of my Pokémon, I powered it up to CP 982!)
But today I was able to get a very nice catch. CP is low, but we'll WORK WITH IT!
I also evolved a Dodrio and a Wartortle. I'm now at Level 16 with 60% progress. I'm saving up a ton of Pidgeys for a good push, and I got a few others close to evolution.
Finally, someone broke down some of the source code in the game and determined that the Incense item spawns 1 Pokémon every 5 minutes while standing still and every 1 minute or 200 meters while moving. That might be of use if you decide to use one.

I had a Kyocera Hydro very briefly. The specs were nice, but it was a shit phone. I had to go back to being an iPhone user. Now that I've spend some time with an Android tablet, I'm glad I use iOS on my phone.

Is the battle system still tactical like normal Pokemon?
Can you leave digital presents behind for other people to find at chosen locations?
No to all of the above. They are going to add trading in an update soon, though. Pokemon Go is more about finding and capturing Pokemon than battling and training, though.
As for presents, you can sort of do that. There are items called lures that you can drop at pokestops that attract pokemon there for everyone for a half an hour. This usually attracts lots of people and can be used to help rally people to nearby gyms to defeat tough opponents.
No direct challenges or trading, but they have said they are working to implement something of that sort.
The battles are very simple as they are done in real time. It is just tap to attack and build up super meters for bigger moves that you tap and hold to execute. You can dodge, but it is just easier to mash it out.

I missed a Fearow in my backyard because the app stopped working again. I'd like to level up but I'm running out of the regular balls. I know I can buy some more but I'd rather not right now. I'm stopping on catching Pidgeys/rats/Weedles/etc. and saving them for those either I don't have or that I need more candy for, all the while restocking at stops for now. I've got a whole mess of Pidgeys stored up as well as a few more that are close/ready to evolve so for now it's battles/hatches/evolutions. I'll look into more balls later in the week.
Try the Eevee trick, people are still reporting it works. I now have an Eevee over 400CP I'll be using as a Jolteon, but I need to get 3 more to try it out.
I also got a Pinsir with over 800 CP today so that was great. It has a different moveset than my 600CP Pinsir so I'll be keeping both.

My time today was limited due to the server outages and multiple app freezes. I really hope they get some of the issues ironed out soon. I'd be having a lot more fun if I didn't feel like I was constantly forced to re-login every ten minutes or so. Even after the servers were supposedly up and running again I was still having trouble getting items from Stops or even Battling at Gyms. I had planned on going for a little walk downtown, since it's got several Stops and a couple of Gyms nearby and I wanted to hatch an egg, but I scrapped those plans when the app kept freezing up on me It didn't even seem to register that I've leveled up. And I noticed today that the (bronze?) metal you earn from catching Rattata's hasn't registered either, even though I've got at least four in my inventory.
Maybe I'll have better luck Sunday.
So don't feel bad, Key. Even some of us who have phones fully capable of playing the app can't always play the app.
So yesterday before the servers went down for a good portion of the day, my daughter Roz and I were starting our morning walk and saw the highly contested Zap Zone gym was being completely dominated by my team. It was a level 9 gym with 2 open spots for pokemon and the weakest in it was over 1k cp. I jumped at the chance to throw in my 800 cp wheepingbell and it has stayed there overnight. This is the first time ever that I have seen a gym be held for so long. It helps that this gym is such a high level. We are talking over 40k points in the gym. I don't think anyone will be taking it over any time soon in part that my wheepingbell is probably low enough for some people to beat up to beef the gym up.
EDIT: Quick aside. When you look at your pokemon in you collection, there is a little semicircle over their head. There is a little white line following it with a white ball on it. That represents how high you can train them. Say that ball is all the way to the right on the semicircle, that means you can't train them any more until you evolve them. The more you know!
