Technically a retro game would be a new game that feels like an old game. Ya know, Shovel Knight. Hotline Miami. Dark Souls.

But technicalities are for assholes.

Is there such a thing as retro food if we're going with this buffet thing? Food that looks old but tastes fresh? is that a thing?

Retro is a fine wine or aged scotch. A Brunello del Montalcino '98 or a Laphroaig 18 year. Modern is McDonalds Sprite.

I don't like this analogy because I don't like wine or scotch, but I do like Sprite.

In my book, retro is any game from at least two generations ago. I'm a little obsessive compulsive, so I have to have concrete guidelines for myself, so I don't expect anyone to agree with me on this.

Actual retro games are games designed to look and feel outdated intentionally.

Retro gaming... I agree with Elkin that games two generations or older, those reside in the realm of being retro to play. Meaning the playing of the old games is a retro oriented activity, but the games themselves are not actually retro.

As for the stupid old/new food analogies... I wouldn't walk into a wine tasting convention and start talking about how much I love grape juice.

 you know I was just giving you a hard time because of your "buffet" analogy when I said I was going PC only, right? It wasn't meant as a serious analogy at all.

Personally, I think I talk about (and play) a good mix of "old games" and "new games." But I don't really pay much attention to it one way or the other. I just like talking about games that I find interesting, regardless of release date or aesthetic.

By that definition, how do you deal with console overlap or PC games? What do you do about games released both on newer and older hardware? Also, do you consider original release date or regional release date to be the specific.

For instance, the Playstation 2 was produced until January 4, 2013. Silent Hill: Shattered Memories came out for it in 2010 in the US, as well as the Wii(at the tale end of 2009 in Japan). Sakura Wars: So Long, My Love originally released on the Playstation 2 in 2005 in Japan but did not come out in the US until 2010, after the release of SH:SM. Now Condemned: Criminal Origins, an Xbox 360 game, came out in 2005. If I were to play these, when would I be retro gaming?
