I'd say it's because a lot of long time Metal Gear fans for whatever reason built up expectations for what a Metal Gear Solid game should be. I wont argue that the story in V is poor considering what MGS4 was for instance. However, I do think it's silly for MGS fans to think that Kojima hasn't done what he wants with little regard for the fans before. See MGS2's big twist or the Acid games or even Peace Walker. Dude just sorta does what he wants. Taken as its own game, which I think it should be, MGSV is pretty brilliant.

I think the only thing it really fucks up is Quiet but I wont spoil any of that controversy for you. Also the microtransaction stuff. That stuff is shitty but if you never play online it doesn't really effect you.

Its assassin creed without the historical fictional story to go along with it. Outposts after Outposts. I was going to endure the tedious nature of the game so I could see the ending and how it relates to the other MGS games......but I had enough, looked at spoilers to know the ending and officially decided to trade it in.

How can this get a 10/10 is beyond me.......This was my last video game purchase of the modern generation and I am now officially done with modern gaming in general.
Yes, this! This so much! I hate to say it, but I just got bored of it.

I have found that mgs v is a game where your fun is derived by how much you put into the game. It is a sandbox game in the way that... it gives you a series of tools and you experiment with them and play with them in fun and unique ways.

The only way you can enjoy the gameplay is by not getting into a rutt. Few games behave like this and they aren't for everyone, I understand that, but if you judge a game with a minimalist approach, you are limiting the fun you can have with the game.

Yeah you can cut corners and rush through things, but where is the fun in that?

So far, I'm at chapter 35 or so. I've completed about half of the side ops, and have listened to every cassette tape I've acquired.

I think part of the issue people are having with the story is due to the fact that a lot of stuff that would have been cutscenes, or at least codec conversations, are now recordings. Probably a direct result of the game being rushed.

Of course, I haven't played the last few episodes that seem to contain story developments that upset people, but that's my impression so far.

It's definitely this. So many toys but, if you don't particularly go out of your way to play with everything the game gives you it can seem shallow on the surface.

I'm going to buy the PC release again Wednesday and play through it for a second time there. I want to try it and make it as hard as possible. I think a mouse will be required.

Steam says I've played this for 15 hours, so that should be enough to form an opinion in my oniopinion.. It's average at best, and the emotional build-up of its precursor "demo" certainly has let me down. I'm expecting a mediocre ending, but I hope at least the middle parts have more substance to them.

This might sound crazy, but I enjoyed playing Sniper Elite 3 more. MGS5 is too streamlined to my liking, and it's not that challenging, plus the map is about as interesting as Arma 2's Takistan. I read that later on you get cooler gadgets and ammo, but perhaps I'm not the target audience with this open-world approach to destruction.

It's the game that was meant to end a storyline that properly started in Metal Gear Solid back in the late 90's.

If a game is meant to be the capstone for what Metal Gear Solid started, it is not out of the question for the fanbase to have opinions. Metal Gear Solid V is a fun diversion but nothing else.
Maybe now Nintendo will acknowledge Metroid has a fanbase?

The reason people say the gameplay is great is that the control, button layout, tools you're given are pretty much perfect. When you're actually in the moment stealthing the game feels like a 10/10. It's the fault of the plot and how the missions are arranged that make it feel repetitive for some, because in some ways it is. That doesn't have to do with the gameplay itself though.

That being said, maybe some people find the game average or boring because that's just how they feel. There's nothing wrong with that. I don't know why but when it comes to the MGS series people constantly make excuses for it.

For some reason it's not held to the same standard as any other game. Think the story is nonsensical? Think the old games had poor control? It's Metal Gear man! This is what you should expect! It's beautiful in its own way! Kojima is a genius!

Just the other day someone tried to tell me that this series was closer to a work of art than any other video game. This is why I can't stand Kojima fans. These are good games to be sure and they're often great, but they're not on any special pedestal whatsoever.

Just because the story is all over the place doesn't mean it's a work of art. It means the creator is not a great writer. Just because the games have flaws doesn't mean said flaws are some quirky intention. It means the devs aren't perfect, just like every other dev.
