AVGN: The Movie
AVGN: The Movie
I did chuckle a little at the movie. But overall I was kinda left dry. The part that I did enjoy the most was the credits. No that's not supposed to be a jab at the film but rather the closure I was looking for, (if you've seen the movie, you know what I'm talking about). He was completely fair about it and really gave insight on the time period and the situation at the time. For that alone it was worth watching the movie.

This is what pretty much shocked me too. The game didn't seem that bad. There were way worse Atari 2600 games, but I guess it was more the bad business decision (making way too many karts) that drove the Atari off the edge and gave this game its infamy.

For me that distinction rather goes to this.

I watched AVGN: The Movie for the first time last weekend. I am a fan of AVGN and have seen every AVGN video made so far. That said, I was kinda disappointed with the movie. I understand the 80's action comedy kitsch this film was going for, and it kind of nails that vibe successfully. That said, a lot of the writing was simply not good, especially some of the dialogue. Too many of the jokes simply fell flat. Even as big of a fan as I am of AVGN, I was empathy-embarrassment-cringing through half of this movie. With better writing and better pacing, this film could have pulled off the cult classic status it was going for. As it exists, this film only appeals to hardcore existing fans, and is in no way a breakthrough capable of converting the unexposed masses. That said, there are some clever moments in this movie, some of the jokes are funny, and there's lots of easter eggs and cameos to recognize if you've been a long time fan. You'll likely watch the movie once, chuckle here and there, cringe a lot, and ultimately say "meh" and never watch it again. 6/10
I think James Rolfe has it in him to be a feature film director overall, but the AVGN concept is better served as short video reviews and not a contrived dorky action hero. Protip: If you're "doing it for the fans" that sort of thing is self evident, coming out and blatantly saying as such comes across as tacky pandering.

I'm trying to wait for the Blu-ray to come out before I see it but this is the impression I mostly got from the trailer. I thought it was cringe-worthy, but then figured/found out they were going for some cheese so I thought "Well this is going to work well or crash and burn." I didn't have high hopes though.
As for your protip, I think James is a very unassuming guy and I don't think pandering is something he really does.

I'm not dissing James. But you'll understand why I said that when you watch the movie.Snatch1414 wrote:I think James is a very unassuming guy and I don't think pandering is something he really does.

I gotcha. I kind of forgot about this movie knowing I wanted the physical copy. I'm in the mood to watch it now that I'm talking about it and might get the download as early as tonight. I think it's $5? (sites blocked here). That's a good price for a move I'm not sure I'll like or not.

I watched the HD download version, the video quality was great. I'd say the movie is worth $5 as a curiosity piece. It's not something I'd buy a physical copy of though because this is a one and done watch personally.

Re: AVGN: The Movie
I thought this movie was God awful.
Watched it with some of my friends because we have the gimmick of torturing ourselves. We watch REALLY bad movies and play pretty shitty games, but we just gave up half way into this, and never went back to finish it.
The comedy was just so....cringe worthy. I'm assuming Rolfe himself wrote this, because hardly anything in the movie was clever. It didn't help that the acting was naturally terrible given that it is based on a web series.
I don't see a point in his gimmick if he's not actually reviewing something. This was like a really bad Pee Wee movie.

Watching it ATM, it's okay. People also need to realize that AVGN was heavily influenced by B movies.

Re: AVGN: The Movie
What does being influenced with B movies have to do with not being able to tell funny jokes?
