So I just played Midnight Mutants for a bit, which is a really fascinating little 7800 exclusive. It is easily one of the most horror/Halloween themed games I've played from the era, and it has a lot of fun little moments.

I'll admit that I haven't gotten very far yet, but I am nonetheless intrigued to give this a full go.

I also played about an hour of Alan Wake last night. It starts strong and looks like it could be fun, though I am hoping it stays more firmly in the "action/horror" genre instead of the "adventure/mystery" genre. We shall see...

^Midnight Mutants looks intriguing. What can you tell us about it (gameplay, etc)?

I suppose it is something like an action/rpg, though that's not quite accurate. There's plenty of walking around and exploring while picking up the next piece of the puzzle/powerup. I suspect that the game could be beaten quickly with a walkthrough, but so far I am just using the map and tips in the manual to help me get around. You should give it a look via emulation - if nothing else it is some of the more advanced 7800 programming.

Oh, and you also call on "Grampa" from The Munsters for advice/stupid jokes as need be.

I spent more time with Midnight Mutants this morning and used a walkthrough - the game is extremely fun, but can be punishing in difficulty if you aren't extra careful. I defeated that ram boss but died trying to get a super blaster (a powerful gun) a little while afterwards. The guide is here over on DP, for those who are interested: http://www.digitpress.com/archives/arc00049.htm

I beat Soul of Darkness, a DSiWare title downloadable from the 3DS eshop.

It is a Castlevania clone in just about every conceivable way. You play as a vampire hunter who is hunting the vampire that has captured your lover. You travel through 11 linear stages fighting ghosts, zombies, werewolves, and other beasts appropriate for the setting. Graphically I'd say the game is almost on-par with the DS Castlevania's; however, the music is really bland.

Soul of Darkness has more in common with the earlier CV's but does have a bit of "Metroidvania" design in the stages. There are branching paths that lead to power ups and those power ups increase your health and magic levels (probably a good idea to go after those).

Overall, the game was fairly easy. After you beat the game you unlock Hard Mode but there's no real replay value as I don't believe there are any other changes or unlockables to Hard Mode.

If you're a die-hard CV fan I'd say this is worth checking out. The game is fairly short but I felt is was well worth the four or five dollar admission fee.

Got the 2 'bad endings' in Castlevania: Dawn of Sorrow, unlocked Julius mode, about to finish up the game and get the good ending today.
