Now that I'm coming pretty close to owning every Gamecube game I really want, I can feel my collecting urges beginning to dwindle. Sure, there's about 10 more games or so that I feel like I actually NEED (not all on GC, lol), but seriously this time - that's it. I feel like the nostalgic hole in my gaming heart is just about filled.

I'm finally ready to plow through what I've been obtaining all this time and truly rediscover what I love so much about this hobby in the first place. Collecting may or may not have made me lost sight of that. I can't tell, but I don't plan on purchasing much else after these last few, unless I stumble upon a deal that I absolutely can not resist.

Collecting vs playing

Post by Spyke »

I bought Layer Section for my Japanese import Saturn and really haven't got into the game. I know everyone else loves it but it just hasn't clicked with me. I love Gunbird and have a copy of Strikers 1945 coming in the mail.

So I thought about selling or trading it, but then had a thought that if everyone else loves it it must be kinda good! And it's in pretty ace condition with the spine card and everything... So for what I'd get if I sold it I wonder if it's better just to hang onto it for a while...

Which brings me to my point: would you sell or trade it for something that you'd PLAY and ENJOY more, or hold onto it as part of an ongoing collection of titles (shmups in my case) in nice condition? I know there's no "right" or "wrong" here - I'm just curious as to the opinions of the board members ;)

Wrong forum.

Anyways, if you don't like it, sell it. If you want it as part of your collection, keep it.

Who gives a shit if lots of other people like it if you don't? It's your collection, not theirs.

What happens to me usually is I'll get every title that I really want on a console and be pretty satisfied then I'll stupidly buy a new console with a new giant list of games I want to get for it and the cycle begins anew.

Gamer, 100%. If I won't play it, I won't buy it. Some games I'll play and feel satisfied with, but I won't deem worthy of keeping. I'll sell them. However, I personally can figure out if I don't like a game pretty quick. Although I may not like it, I feel the need to finish it.

I have a problem.

I'm definitely caught between both worlds because I seem to buy a million things I actually want to play, but never find time to, so they sort of end up sitting on the shelf ala collectors. Then I find more cool stuff and then it takes time to track that down, then just when you think you've got it all, you find something else and so it goes on. I'm sure most people like me just start out as open minded gamers with a hardcore mentality and just have our minds blown, especially if you appreciate stuff all the way back to the beginning of video games. I have a hard time not buying a Colecovision because it has a trackball and a steering wheel, which is pretty badass. So you stumble upon thousands of games you want to play, but there's just not enough time to do it and you get caught in a vortex that's near impossible to escape from.

Unless you're the type who has to have every game, even games you hate, I'd say you're more of a gamer than a collector. If you're buying all the Sega Genesis sports games to complete a Sega Genesis collection even though you hate sports games, then you don't make much sense to me, but to each his own. Inevitably, they're buying games they don't want to play just to have and I end up buying games I do want to play just to have. :?

I feel like I was a collector, but I'm trying to be more like a gamer. My problem is when I have games I know are good games but they're games I personally don't like, it's hard to get rid of them because I know they're good. Slowly getting past that though.

I am a gamer and a collector, As far as the gamer part, yes i play in my spare time (which is not too often) and i usually finish every game i get my hands on, As far as collecting i have systems that i haven't even played yet (gamecube and recently out the box ps2). So far I have 46 titles for ps2 (i just counted) and that's just about 2 month's worth of bargain searching, So im always out there searching for those good ol bargains, at garage sales or flea markets, you'd be surprised there's always something out there..

Can't we be both?

I used to be both, getting a pre-order game so I could get the cool bonuses, but buy a used copy so I could play. But most of my games are just "for fun". (And I've since lost the ability to buy two games at once, much less even find the time to play ONE.)
My scheduling skills have died of dysentery; I hope to visit at least on a monthly basis.
Still, don't forget to tip your waitress.
