You level up in SotN, you don't level up in Zelda.

This is why I play shmups. Look at how simple that vote is going :P

RPGs are srs buziness.

I totally agree though, as I said last page, the comparison is just silly.

Yep, but that's Zelda II. I would classify that as an RPG and a lot closer in action to Ys.

Yeah, something like Golden Axe Warrior or Golvellius would be closer to the original Zelda, or maybe even Landstalker/Alundra

Ys just doesn't give me that "Zelda Clone" feeling, as you have to approach the enemies very differently. Learning patterns is a must in some of the fights, since you litterally have to ram into the boss to do damage, and the window when they can be hit is sometimes 1 second, or even less.

But damn is it fun.

So, SotN is a J-RPG? That was the point I was making.

SotN is not a J-RPG. It is an action game. Heck, it's more of a side-scrolling action adventure game.

Zelda (I think of I or III) is an overhead action adventure game.

Ys in an overhead action adventure game. The leveling up in Ys and CotN is a very basic type. The leveling up mechanic used in those Zelda games involved a different process (collecting permanant items), but the end-result is the same; a longer life bar, and stronger defense and offense.

None are J-RPGs. I do not understand why Ys is in this thread if the point is to compare a western RPG to a Japanese one.

If I were to describe Ys to a casual gamer, guess which game series I would use to compare it to? Of course, Zelda. It is not a Zelda clone, but it is similar enough to make them comparable.

Some solid points there Breetai. While I don't agree that its a Zelda clone, its definitely not a jrpg.

Maybe Phantasy Star should have been the choice 8)
