There is a big difference in my book, and there's barely any JRPG's out there that I've played (and that's a lot of them) where I REALLY needed to "grind" to get past something, AKA spend hours running around some level to level up my characters. Most JRPG's are so easy (seriously can't stress this enough) that you don't even need to do this, probably unless it's Dragon Quest or the NES Final Fantasy's and a few other old exceptions.
So as always, I think people really exaggerate that aspect.
Whether you have to "grind" or not, random battles are still annoying, and menu-based fighting is still about as boring as watching paint dry to me.
Give me a good action-RPG or hack-n-slash dungeon crawler and I'll have a blast, though.
