Best thread ever, lol.

Yeah, so it's pretty funny how Wily's last creation helped the world and Light's had the opposite effect.

I think Gamerforlife is certainly onto something about Zero potentially being very popular in Japan perhaps, it makes sense with all the appearances he's had in games and all the popularity he gets. That said, I'm kind of with you CFFJR that by the end of the day, it's you, X, kicking all the ass on screen and all that. That and well like I kind of said above and Gamerforlife pointed out about some people, you could say I am among the group that is a bit lukewarm about Zero basically being Protoman's replacement (even felt this way in 1993-1994 as a kid. I also thought Zero was a girl probably until X2 when his suit wasn't so slim, haha). Whereas Mega Man and X are slightly comparable (I guess) it's not a big deal there, but I wouldn't say that one bit at all about Zero and Protoman, as they're just totally different and the X series kind of lacks that rogue, anti-hero character (would have been cool if Vile played that role, always been a big fan of him).

Also, as cool as it is playing as Zero in X4-X6 (and X3 to an extent, that I never use lol), I think he's pretty game breaking. He just makes the games a cakewalk joke. I kind of always liked playing as X for the extra challenge and Zero's swordplay adds such a different dynamic it's almost like that should be a different game itself, lol. I think Mega Man & Bass had better balance with the two characters thing, Bass is a bit quicker, has double jump, and a rapid firing buster that can shoot in 8 directions, but it dealt way less damage than Mega Man's. So it feels equally challenging playing as either character.

But it's not like I'm grumpy about the Zero thing. Like I was saying earlier, I personally don't try too hard to connect the two timelines, so Protoman is Protoman and Zero is Zero. That's all interesting to hear Keiji wanted the X series to be all about Zero though, but I'd say I'm definitely happy with the way it turned out with him more in the background adding all that mystery and stuff to the series.

This thread is a great reminder that despite how hardcore I am into the original series and the X games, I still haven't played much of the Zero GBA games at all. I'm definitely planning on getting to them sometime this year though.

Heck, it's been awhile since I've played some of the X games, heh. Maybe I should hit some of them up again.

I sort of want to contest the idea that the original Mega Man isn't sentient. He's pretty clearly meant to be seen the same way as Tetsuwan Atom (Astro Boy), after whom Mega Man was closely modeled--especially in his domestic/civilian form as Rock. It's discussed a few times that Astro Boy has a "soul" (they use "kokoro" which is generally translated as "heart") even though he is not completely the same as a human. He is a "person" and is aware of what he does and thinks, and his feelings are treated as genuine rather than simulated. He occupies a weird place that is less than fully human, but (as Mega Man says in MM7) more than "just a robot."

Where Rock would most differ from a human isn't lack of self-awareness so much as a limited range of thought. He can't originate thought, except as a synthesis of what's inherent to his programming. For instance, his unusual request to be converted to a different function could be considered an original combination of his pre-programmed sense of justice (why he needed one, I don't know, but it's established that he had one) and his pre-programmed desire to be helpful. Without these, he might have been emotionally upset by Wily's actions, but it would never have occurred to him to do anything about it.

X, on the other hand, had no built-in directives. He had to decide for himself what was right and wrong, and chose to fight out of his own sense of personal responsibility rather than a built-in concept of justice.

And on a random note in addition to that, can't forget the second biggest influence!

I'm gonna figure Mazinger was a big influence as well. Dr. Hell and all the Dr's everywhere, they're just so utterly Light/Wily it's hilarious.

Yep! Dr. Light's name almost has to be a nod to Dr. Photon. I think that about covers the biggest influences. Plenty of other minor ones.

This seems like the right thread for this. Just something cool I'm not sure people know about. I always thought it was a rumor, but apparently Maverick Zero has an ultimate, unavoidable, insta-kill attack in Mega Man X 5. Well, it's not completely unavoidable, but once he's starts using it you're fucked. I heard he has this move in one of Capcom's versus fighting games. Damn, Wily didn't fuck around

The first vid shows it wiping out a full health bar. The second vid shows that there is practically no one to win when he reaches this stage. You can't dodge it and there's only so many invincibility frames you can abuse

I guess he just got fed up from losing to Rock all those times.
My scheduling skills have died of dysentery; I hope to visit at least on a monthly basis.
Still, don't forget to tip your waitress.

Ok, I've gotta ask, related to my Megaman vs. X question from earlier...

How about Volnutt? Could Volnutt beat X or Zero?

I've never played Legends, so I couldn't even guess on this.

Well, trying to keep spoilers out, probably yes. He uses a wider variety of tools than the previous Megamen, so he'd likely have a tool for every situation. For an idea, just look at his TvC incarnation. We also know he can dash, and high jump. He may be slower than the other Megaman, but his wide variety of tools and weapons gives me more versatility.

If he couldn't, it would likely be only because X and Zero had more battle experience.

Yeah, the experience thing is a good point. Zero has more combat experience than anyone. He was dueling Sigma and killing maverick hunters before X ever even took the field. I can't imagine there's anything he can't beat.

I think beating X or Zero might have to come down to raw power, because not only do X and Zero have lots of combat experience, they also adapt after every enemy they defeat. That makes them pretty damn hard to kill. Plus, their power ratings in Mega Man X's ending were listed as question marks. That means that no one has ever actually discovered X and Zero's limits to my knowledge, assuming they even have any
