Thanks o.pwuaioc. That saved me from having it dig it out of notes, which are probably outdated by this point anyway. The first thing I did was draw up a list, so it'll be somewhat amusing to compare my rough draft to what I ended up using.

I am appreciative, o Roman.
No Magician? No Immortal? Super C? Metal Gear? Ultima: Quest of the Avatar?
Hmm. I can speculate what four of the top five will be (one to some minor personal derision) but I'm drawing a blank on #5. SMB3, LoZ, DQ/DW, and grudgingly, MM2 are a given.

I'm guessing the top 5 should go like:

5. Kid Icarus
4. Mega Man 2
3. Legend of Zelda
2. Metroid
1. Super Mario Bros. 3

That would still leave some that would be on my list (although I'm not Satoshi Matrix, so don't think this is some sort of criticism!), like Galaga, Castlevania II, Metal Gear, and Battletoads.

Huh, so you're betting on Kid Ic? And damn, how can I forget Metroid. (Please note, I actually don't mean that in the good way. Cartography Metroid was frustrating to no end. The 3D voxel-edition of Metroid thankfully came with auto-mapping.) I'm not selling the game short; it was ground-breaking for its time, packs a lot into such a tiny space, and is historically significant... I just think the first game is maddeningly difficult.

I'm hoping for Ultima: Quest of the Avatar as a surprise dark horse.

Oh, yeah, UQofA was great, but no top 5. And you didn't like Metroid? Man, for me, mapping out Metroid was half the fun, and Nintendo Power helped you along the way. Granted, I do now prefer Super Metroid's system...

Really? I still think the free-roaming world of Ultima is pretty bad-ass for an NES game. (You can still attack townsfolk!)

And Nintendo Power didn't just help with Metroid, they did the whole job. Any way to discern one corridor from another is a lot easier when you have the whole picture in front of you. (The GB sequel was a lot nicer about it.) Maybe I just have a preference for "smaller" games, but Zelda's world was much more manageable among the neighborhood. (2nd Quest with "bomb everywhere, burn everything, whistle while you do it" was... help me Nintendo Power!)

Well, I didn't claim you'd follow my order, but so far it's 1 for 1. ;)

Also, I'm getting worried that Kid Icarus might not actually make the cut! I'm looking forward to what you actually put in there. :)

By the way, and not to nitpick, but: "It is thanks to this one game that dared think outside the box we would bebe treated to some of the best games ever made that closely emulate it such as Super Metroid, Castlevania Symphony of the Night and Cave Story, just to name a few. Not too shabby, Metroid."

"If you could manage to clear the entire game in under an hour, you would be treated to a bazaar scene where Samus would not only reveal she was a woman, but a woman wearing a skimpy Bikini under her Power Suit. Hey, I guess it gets hot in their or something?"

"This was not the case in the Japanese build, despite how prevy they usually are with stuff like that."

"it was on the GameBoy," (It's Game Boy, right? or am I mistaken there?)

Metroid was also one of the first free-scrolling NES games (after Kid Icarus I believe)
Though the visuals are sparse even for an NES game, Metroid is one of the few NES games that could be described as atmospheric, as the game successfully conveys each of the dark underground areas you explore as completely alien and hostile. You don’t fight against humanoid enemies, but rather strange cave dwelling creatures like inhabit the abyss of Zebes
The lack of detail actually helps. It's like getting lost inside a dark cave; all the walls start to look alike, there are only bugs and bats who are there to attack you as you probe deeper into their world. You begin to lose hope. To worry. It's not like you have a jetpack to fly you out. No. You're stuck in this painful Hell and you must scrounge and scratch for survival, relying on the randomly found power-up to harden you for the next room.
It is thanks to this one game that dared think outside the box we would bebe treated to some of the best games ever made that closely emulate it..
ld manage to clear the entire game in under an hour, you would be treated to a bazaar scene where Samus would not only reveal she was a woman, but a woman wearing a skimpy Bikini under her Power Suit. Hey, I guess it gets hot in their or something? Obviously, this fact enticed a whole generation of young boys to try and beat the game as quickly as they could.
"Bizarre." Man, even half awake I spell-check. And also, the bikini was a bonus; the more feasible endings include her in a [url=http://metroid-database.com/features/2d_endings.jpg]one-piece swi-- err.. space-suit.

Nice mention of the North American Release Password (NARPAS SWORD)... but no mention of the ENGAGE RIDLEY one.
