The first two Crysis games have a semi-open-setting that enables the player a bit more freedom than the average corridor-based FPS. It looks decent but admittedly it was unoptimised but the standalone 'expansion' fixed most of the nasty coding involved in the first outing.

Plenty of videos online, and demos too.

Still playing TimeSplitters, the single player is really difficult,it is kind of easy on easy, but it ramps up quite a lot on normal and hard :)

Killzone (PS2)

Despite the poor, choppy framerate and occasional repetitive dialogue. I find the graphics and level designs on the single-player campaign to be extremely impressive for the PS2.

Even though I've played a lot of other impressive FPS games on the PS2, like Black. This game has still dropped my jaw quite a few times at how much graphical detail Guerilla was able to produce on this game. Like the reloading animations for starters, just WOW! Very impressive. And right now I'm battling my way through the jungle/swamp levels on my way to the fortress and I gotta say these levels are incredibly well-detailed and fun to play through. I mean, just try comparing these levels to the jungle levels on Medal of Honor: Rising Sun - lol! It's no contest.

The AI in Killzone is a little on the dumb side. That's another flaw. But I still find the game to be somewhat challenging on "Normal" since a lot of the firefights do get pretty intense at times. Especially if you're out of grenades or low on ammo on your main guns, then you suddenly have to fight your way through hordes of Helghast with skill shots or a handgun, and that's kinda the way it should be - you shouldn't be able to just walk straight through every level blowing all your enemies to pieces.

Anyway...

My Ratings
Story - 8
Sound - 6
Graphics - 9
Gameplay - 7
Replay Value - 8

Overall - 7

Personally, I would LOVE to see this game get the HD treatment on the PS3! If they could sharpen the graphics a little, clear up some of the sound issues, smooth the framerate, fix a few of the gameplay glitches, and maybe add some new online play modes.. then this game could possibly be the game that everyone initially wanted and hoped it would be.
"Welcome to the circus of values!"

I love the first Killzone.. so much in fact I played through it twice! Too bad PCSX2 is bad at handling it (or Black for that matter), would have loved to use keyboard/mouse to control it.

It's certainly the most impressive FPS for the system, the LOD algorithm is buggy but it still delivers some of the finest detail on the system. The Helghast are cool muthas as well, yelling at the player all the time and taking so many rounds to go down.

Does Portal 2 have its own thread yet? I'm going to start playing soon!

The first Killzone was one of the glitchiest games I've ever played, I remember dropships going through or coming up through the ground textures and all, hilarious. That said yeah it wasn't bad.

What you are about to hear will sound like a dumb question.

If I play Half-Life 2 without having played the first game am I gonna miss anything important in terms of the story or character development (Or anything really)?

I really wouldn't recommend that route, even though technically... they are quite stand alone and there's only a few characters and whatnot that carry over, that the second game makes so obvious so you probably wouldn't be that behind on much. HL1 was fairly simplistic honestly, so it's almost like a prequel in a sense that HL2 is far more ambitious and the real story (with the episodes following, and us being on a cliffhanger for years now. Thanks Valve).

If you go about playing them that way for some reason, just understand that the G-Man is amazing.

Would a Wikipedia summary suffice? I'm asking because I'll probably never have a computer good enough to play Half-Life without buying a new computer and that's not gonna happen anytime soon. However, I've been putting off buying the Orange Box for the desire to play the games in chronological order.

It doesn't take much to play the original Half-Life. If you have a computer made in the last decade you are probably fine. I would STRONGLY recommend starting with HL1.
