Kof 98's has its difficulty...as does the rest of the series...and we can all agree on that.
that said, this game looks beautiful for its age. the sprites are animated fluidly and colors tend to jump out at you. then again, this is all commonplace compared to the SNK library.
great variety of teams and amazing game play make this one for the MAME cab...actually locked this on my cab @ college for a day to see the reaction...within an hour or two, a tournament had broken out. shows how addictive this can be!
think i'll be participating in this more often! (and consequently, so will my dorm mates)

Okay, finally got my copy of Dream Match '99.
On default difficulty, my team of Terry Bogard, Blue Mary, and Ryo Hakawatchamacallit were unstoppable until I got to Rugal.
And then we were quite well stopped.
I really do appreciate the bonus you get if you lose and continue. A) the random nature of it is pretty exciting and B) just imagine how many extra quarters SNK collected from this gimmick?

Maybe now Nintendo will acknowledge Metroid has a fanbase?

I still have flashes of Ultimate Rugal from CVS2

King is killing me in this game. I typically main King in most KoF games. Her scripted combos make for a nice breather. I cannot find a way to make here effective in this version.

Do you find that her Venom Strikes aren't nearly as useful in this version?
I stick with trap shots and play her more like Chun Li in this version than a female Joe Higashi
Re: Together Retro: The King of Fighters '98
I just cannot get close enough to make any of her trap moves effective. She has no range whatsoever and her Surprise Rose has zilch priority.

Re: Together Retro: The King of Fighters '98
y'know what's weird? I'm not really enjoying this game.
I feel like I should really enjoy KOF98. I love 2D fighting games. I've enjoyed other SNK fighting games in fact. I used to have Fatal Fury on SNES. And I remember liking Samurai Shodown in the arcades. But this is difficult for me to really love.
It's weird though. I love the sprite work. I think everything looks amazing. I think it controls well. I like a lot of the characters.
But as has been touched upon by others, I think there's just too many characters. So in a way, the game's selling point is its problem.
If it were a 1-on-1 instead of a 3-on-3, I think I'd get a lot more out of it. For instance, if I only had to learn how to play as Mai, I think I'd get really good at it. But my team is Mai, Terry and Choi. I play really well with Mai, but then she's gone and I play so-so with Terry and then he's gone, and then it's a crap-shoot with Choi. I don't want to spend days/weeks/months trying every character to see which TWO others I'd want to LEARN how to use. I'd like to just have one that I stick with and get good at.
Similarly, because the roster is so huge I keep facing "new" opponents. So I never really get a feel for them. I never really learn how to fight against them. So even though I've been playing KOF98 for two weeks, every time I play it I feel like it's the first time I'm putting in a quarter and just hoping that I can wing it.
