The comic incorporated the stories from those games, but I'm not aware of any significant way the games referenced or incorporated the comics.

In fact, the games directly contradict the "Dr. Kintobor" origin story from the comics, by naming Eggman's grandfather "Gerald Robotnik," not Kintobor.

Nearly all of the Sonic stories out there borrow elements from each other at some point. One continuity inspires aspects of another continuity, which in turn inspires elements in future episodes of the first continuity... Much how Amy Rose made her way from the manga, through the games, into the Archie comics, or how the U.S. fiction's depiction of Sonic loving chili dogs led to their inclusion in Sonic and The Black Knight. Even so, the fact is that these separate versions of the Sonic universe only borrow from one another and do not mesh. They are not one singular story. It doesn't get any more "official" than what's presented in the games themselves, so that has to trump everything else.

So....are the Archie Sonic comics any good? When I lived in the states, I loved it, but I was a kid back then.

From what I remember, when I read it, Sonic had already defeated Robotnik, and he was traveling the world to defeat a wizard, when he met a really short Morgan Freeman.... I mean scientist, who told him something about the power rings, and he showed sonic a cave with many many power rings....and then I left the states, and you rarely see American comics being sold in Europe (companies started publishing DC/Marvel comics again, after the boom in popularity those brands had with the movies).

I liked that arc, at least what I read of it. Also the Knuckles comics were pretty good, with a TON more backstory than I thought would be possible for the sonic universe. At least for a kid. you guys think I'd like them as an adult? (and huge sonic 90s fans. loved Sonic SatAM, and even Sonic Underground, which was basically Sonic SatAM the musical)

Not to derail the conversation but I have to say this:

This is the most polite, reasonable, and friendly conversation I've seen on the internet about Sonic the Hedgehog since Al Gore, fueled by Jolt cola, created the internet in 1876. I didn't think it was possible for Sonic fans to be civil.
Maybe now Nintendo will acknowledge Metroid has a fanbase?

never read the Archie comics, but I always used to LOVE the Sonic The Comic series that we had in the UK (and perhaps other parts of Europe). They used to often base stories too on the actual Sonic games, but expand on them.

True, there is a noticeable lack of top hats and monocles. But still quite classy for a Sonic discussion. No one has even complained about pot belly vs no pot belly or eye color.

In my perfect world, the closer Sonic looks to the way he does in the Sonic CD animes, the better-- and he exists in a post-apocalyptic world once lain to waste by the rampant pollution and irresponsibility of mankind, but slowly restoring itself back to the natural order... the single remaining human being the psychotic egomaniac named Dr. Robotnik whom, in a display of humanity that is both admirable and shameful all at once, preserves the industrious legacy of his (and our) species on a planet which will no longer tolerate him... oh, and throw in more Metal Sonic, which opens up a whole new Human Nature vs. Mother Nature dichotomy. None of these concepts requiring the employment of so much of the over-bearing cut-scenes and friends and voices and beastiality that we've come to find in more recent years.

...but LORD KNOWS I'm in the minority there -- I'd be a fool not to realize that!

EDIT: ...and give that winking smiley-face a top hat and monocle!
