I've got it! Japanese zombie movie (2009?) based on HOTD in a shopping district mall. When the horde breaks loose it actually has the actors on turntables holding their weapons.
Bio-Zombie!
The dubbed version is better than the sub'd. Looks like it's on Youtube (tho quality is bad, and in parts).

never heard of this. Besides zombies, what's the HOTD connection? The IMDB and Wiki pages mention it being a parody of Dawn Of The Dead w/ the shopping mall and all. I can't find anything about it being related to HOTD though?

They are playing it in their VCD shop on their Saturn, then when the horde come, the survivors are depicted as players with their stats and weapons displayed like the player select screen of the game. Not much more, but as far as zombie movies go, this one is both a parody and a well done & researched clone - all the tropes are played out well. The director plays the "sushi boy". Certainly not all that VG related, only a favorite among my friends when we were researching how to survive the inevitable zombie apocalypse - this necessitated watching every zombie movie ever.

In any case, I will finish watching Indie Game. I remember thinking the bias had to be skewed. I'll be trying to find the other side before I comment. But, Yeah, AFAIK Phil's an asshole who makes great games... I'll try hard to take his side. A lot of the stuff he was going through I can sorta empathize with, having mosquito-like people constantly asking the same stupid questions during development of my own failed engine. Good call on the selection.

VCD... on Saturn? Wow. I'll add it to the masterlist of possible future movies!

Oh yeah, the sidekick is always taking pictures with his Gameboy Colour and a Gameboy Camera. It plays a big part near the end.

that's awesome.

I'm working on a sort of calendar of future movies, and most months will be either tying the picks in to month, season, Together Retro game, or something similar. But some months will just be straight up wild cards for funsies. I'm also not planning to announce the movies in advance, to keep it spontaneous (and allow me to make last minute changes).

RE: Indie Game The Movie - if anyone watches and gets the itch to play Fez, Super Meatboy or Braid this month, feel free to include discussion of the games in this thread as well. It's been a couple years since I've played any of those myself.
