Re: Shmup of the Month Club 2013 (Shienryu)
I enjoy Shienryu a lot, but can't argue with anything Mike said. I think the best way to play this one is to put in a single run per night.

I still don't think it's as bad as when you die in a Gradius game.

Not as bad as Gradius, but the start of 5-1 is a bad place, or 5-4. Both places are brutal restarts. If you bomb once or twice until you get your speed back, you can recover though.
Also, one more nit-pick, and maybe we're spoiled by more modern shooters, but the bomb in Shienryu has to be more planned, not panic to save yrself. It is about 1/4 second delay and I seem to rarely survive when panic bombing, where you would almost always survive in a mondern shooter.
Also, if you don't start a game before it goes back to the attract scene, the scores apparently reset :/

OMG I love your score!
I just beat SMT IV, so I'm free to shmup again. Will give some runs tomorrow.

I never got a PM about any scores to this game guys. If this is a joke I'd appreciate being let it on it

My final playthrough of this game, from an all vulcan run that got 4.4 million in 6-1, to an all lightning run which made the Stage 5 boss MUCH easier -
ExedExes - 5,186,060 - 6-2 - MAME

Lightning=Points. I think that settles it.

Man, I don't see how you guys survive with the lightning. All it seems to do is get me killed.

I can't play w/lightning either. Waaaay too long w/o being able to shoot at certain segments - it makes the 3-2, 3-4, 4-1, 4-4, 4-6, 5-1 and 5-5 stages really tough as those are enemy heavy areas and as number of enemy bullets pickup you're stuck there too long waiting for your shot to come back.
It is the best weapon for bosses stage 3 and beyond, particularly the octopus boss, but aside from that, no thank you.
I had one run today, 4.3 mil so not my high, but the first 4 stages were great - flawless and cleared the octopus boss w/11 bombs for a real nice stage clear bonus - before dying all my deaths in about 45 seconds :/. At one point on stage 3 I got the purple P powerup and when I grabbed it, it released about 30 powerups - i'd never seen that before. Anyone else have that happen or know what triggered it?
