Re: Random Gaming Thoughts
The survival games I would recommend would be DayZ, for it's dynamic on-line environment that can create the most frustrating, yet magical moments in any game. Great to play alone, or with friends, the game takes time and effort to survive, but it is all worth it to fulfill whatever roll you see yourself in a apocalyptic world. Are you the lone survivor who spends their time out in the wilderness hunting and gathering? A collector of books? A man searching for other survivors to rebuild? Or just a man who wants to watch the world burn even more? This is a place for you.Forlorn Drifter wrote:I didn't even know they had those on Steam.
If I was looking for survival based games, what would be suggested?
If you want a solo-only experience, I would recommend, The Forest. You play a survivor of a crashed airplane and your son was taken by the natives. You must avoid them while building up your base and gathering resources. What makes it great is the natives themselves. You can set up traps for them, make giant imposing totems comprised of their body parts, or watch them freak out as someone they love is murdered by you. You see them in the trees and patrolling the forest, being curious of your existence and testing the boundaries of what they can get away with around you before making their big moves. It is a really really interesting game.

I "played" Sakura Spirit. My roommate got it for me in the hopes that I'd play it and he could watch since, apparently, Cirno wasn't allowed to stream it with video because Twitch mods being arseholes.
Thing is, I don't know why they wouldn't allow people to stream it. There wasn't any nudity. Well, there was plenty of nudity, but none of the fun bits were shown. It was all "convenient_censoring" with lucky strands of hair, fun-killing weaponry, fuzzy fox tails and whatever else getting in the way of anything that would prevent it from being on Toonami.
Maybe it gets worse later on, I didn't complete it because... it was a chore. I go into a visual novel expecting no more gameplay than a choose-your-own-adventure book, but this damn thing didn't even have that much gameplay. It was just a linear line of text. Eh.
I'll give them that the art was good. Mostly. There were a few parts where the art was kinda deviantart tier, but mostly it was stuff I wouldn't mind having in an artbook.
I don't have any objections though. It's pretty easy to filter Steam to only show you the games you want to see. I pretty much only see things that are shmups, fighters, or games with Jake Kaufman soundtracks when I dive into Steam, so the horny otaku can have their Steamy Steam games and I'll be fine with it. Hell, I might even give a few of them a shot if they actually have some gameplay.
Fact is, as much of a chore Sakura Spirits was, I can definitely say it was still better than most of the Steam Greenlight crap that gets unholy amounts of YouTube/Twitch exposure.
Or the EVO 2015 lineup, for that matter.

Rock Paper Shotgun did an excellent 5-day series of blog posts on the state of survival games. I would read through some of what they wrote from that time frame to get a sense for what fits you:Forlorn Drifter wrote: If I was looking for survival based games, what would be suggested?

That being said, as someone with a passing interest in this genre, I think Minecraft can be fun as a survivalist game, and you can add mods to up the realism and difficulty to suit your needs. I also thought Miasmata was a flawed, but interesting survival game that had some very unique elements that included old-school cartography skills using a compass and triangulation techniques. It also had a lot of botany skills necessary for survival. Another cool game that is more retro is Robinson's Requiem, and particularly its sequel Deus. These games are like extreme Star Trek with no prime directive. You land on an alien planet and your job is to live by whatever means possible amongst hostile natives and harsh environments. You might also want to check out The Sims 2: Castaways (console only) for a more friendly survivalism experience.
As for what is popular right now, I haven't played any of these games, but I know people like DayZ, The Forest, Rust, and 7 Days to Die. A lot of these are still in early access, but that doesn't keep them from selling like fire.

Re: Random Gaming Thoughts
It's incredibly elitist to complain that the wrong kind games are being sold at a store. If we can accept junk like Beyond Two Souls, I think we can accept a game showing a breast.
I can go to any local bookstore and pick up a copy of 50 Shades of Grey, the fact that I can't do the same with Steam, not just because they act as a gatekeeper but because the gatekeeping is so incredibly severe, 50 Shades of Grey can't even exist in the medium.
The only Adults Only game of any meaningful budget released since the formation of the ESRB is Manhunt 2 and it got censored back to take off the rating.
But I shouldn't spoil my next article so easily

Regardless of what assets were on the disc, there wasn't actually any nudity shown in the game. If you're referring to the craptacular writing, then, sureErik_Twice wrote:It's incredibly elitist to complain that the wrong kind games are being sold at a store. I think the ESRB and in turn Steam are a lot more focused on context. Plenty of M-rated games on Steam have nudity and sex, just not as the primary theme. Just like R-rated movies can get away with plenty, but if the entire thing is softcore porn, well...it's probably gonna get an NC-17 rating, and not get carried by a lot of retailers as a result.

Dude video games are for kids and shouldn't have anything beyond PG13 in them. Movies and books are for adults so they can have the jiggly bits though.Erik_Twice wrote:It's incredibly elitist to complain that the wrong kind games are being sold at a store. Obviously I'm not serious. GOOD NEWS EVERYONE. One day everyone currently over the age of 45* will be dead and video games as a conduit will be accepted with the same level of seriousness as other mediums by successive societal generations.
*Congratulations if you're a gamer over the age of 45 who feels games are for adults too, but you are the minority in your demographic, and exceptions don't make the rule.
These:Forlorn Drifter wrote:If I was looking for survival based games, what would be suggested?
PLAY KING'S FIELD.
Re: Random Gaming Thoughts
I actually doubt that will happen. The biggest obstacle isn't demographics or even trends in game content, it is that games are a form of play and play is a concept most associated with youth.Exhuminator wrote:GOOD NEWS EVERYONE. Or, more specifically, play and seriousness are uncomfortable bedfellows.
