Actually have something frown-y to add (it's sorta long):
I guess I'll preface by saying that I don't think I've ever given negative feedback on Ebay before, but I got burned on shipping. Again. (By the same seller.)
The back-story:
The first time I ordered from this seller (who sells PS2 games and is based in Japan) he had a shipping policy similar to most other Japanese sellers' policies, with one caveat: Some games add $2 to the shipping cost while others (for all intents and purposes, arbitrarily) add $6
at the time they are added to the order. Worked that little number out after I ordered; Okay, so I didn't read thoroughly enough, and assumed something I shouldn't have. I guess I can take my lumps there.
A short time after receiving that order, and seeing that some of the games were in far better shape than I had anticipated, I decided to check on the seller's items again, and found a few more great deals. Keeping in mind that special brand of shipping calculation the seller used, I checked on each item to plan out my ordering, when I saw that the combined shipping policy had changed to what I assumed to be more familiar territory: "We will combine shipping. The discount is 2 dollars."
Again I assumed too much, and found out the hard way when I saw that shipping on four items (totaling $18) would be $26. So before losing my shit, I thought that maybe I would wait to see if he was actually going to be shipping it EMS instead, or something.
Two weeks later, I'm greeted with a package with 780 yen in postage on it! ($9.20 at the conversion rate on the date it was sent.) At this point I'm upset. So before flying off the handle, I tried the responsible thing and contacted the seller. I made my case, asked for a refund in the vicinity of the difference between the shipping charge I payed and the actual shipping price ($15). I got a prompt reply to the extent of, 'I employ people, so you can sit and spin,' and, "When I can reduce an expense, I will return money to my customer." This stuff. This is the kind of stuff that made me want out of Japan so badly.
It's partly my fault, I get that, but:
tl;dr - Are hidden charges in shipping costs worthy of negative feedback on ebay?
Also of note, the seller has a flat-rate policy (essentially, all games priced the same) and those prices have now gone up roughly 45% (with a little more laddering) from when I placed my orders, while still employing the same combined shipping policy.
