Frown: I have a lot of friends who are super pro-2nd Amendment. And that's fine. Guns aren't my thing but then everyone is different. The thing that bothers me is that every other thing they post online is some half-baked meme or gif about how great guns are and how dumb gun control is. It makes my friends seem paranoid and really gets on my nerves.
Today, a friend posted a picture from Schindler's List, the joke being that in Nazi Germany, there were extensive gun control laws in place and that's why the holocaust happened.
It pisses me off for a lot of reasons.
One, the notion is, at best, a logical fallacy. At worst it's bat shit crazy intellectually dishonest. The holocaust happened because the German populace provided either popular support for the removal of Jews or at least popular consent. So if the majority of the population that removes a minority of a population has more guns, what's the difference? It'd be more efficient? More people could be more directly complicit?
It pisses me off because it's almost the exact OPPOSITE lesson that the world is supposed to have learned from that horrible event. The holocaust happened because of paranoia, fear, suspicion, and hate. The exact emotions that are being played upon by both sides of the gun control argument. Given that those sentiments existed because of a time of prolonged economic strife only makes the parallels to today more worrisome.
And it pisses me off because I hate seeing people who I 99% of the time think of as smart, well-reasoned people post what amounts to frothing sardonic drivel and I'm forced to make the decision to either continue to come across that shit or remove them from my social networking contacts and then risk some kind of childish bullshit about that.

Nicely stated. i can sympathize with you to some extent, as I'm mot sure why the 2nd Amendment is one of those issues that so many people have to go batshit crazy about when they argue for it.Flake wrote:Smile: Taking the day off. Re: What Made you Smile/What Ticked you off Today?
It's not hard to understand. Guns are big business. The more people are worried that their rights are about to be infringed upon, the more they buy guns. The NRA is a propaganda tool for the gun industry.dsheinem wrote:Nicely stated. i can sympathize with you to some extent, as I'm mot sure why the 2nd Amendment is one of those issues that so many people have to go batshit crazy about when they argue for it.
On the flip side, people who do not like guns usually do not understand them and fear them. Natural result is a body of people who want to legislate them away.
It's a vicious circle where the only winners are the guys who own the gun companies and the politicians who get elected for life.

Re: What Made you Smile/What Ticked you off Today?
When you add anonymity to any polarizing subject, it's surprising how some people react. I'm pro-gun, anti-5,000 stockpiles of bullets. A friend accused me of being partly to blame for the CT massacre because I own guns. Read that again. A friend of mine said I was partly to blame for some nut killing twenty-six innocent human beings because I enjoy the sport of marksmanship.Flake wrote: Rant Incoming
Best to just let their nonsense roll off your shoulder unless you feel you need to speak to them in person. People will always butt heads, but don't waste time on someone who is so one dimensional unless you think it is your time. I've been in only a few debates on this forum, and that is only because I respect the opinions of those who I debate with and I know I'm not always right. But you'll notice that when someone posts something close to "You ass eating son of a whore" I'm not likely to respond.

Hm, I haven't seen those memes, but I don't doubt they exist. I wonder if they are confused though. I've seen a video with Chuck Woolery about assault weapons, and he mentions Germany and it's gun control laws real quick, but he does NOT mention it being the cause/allowance of the Holocaust.
I wonder if your friend (or the people who made the memes) are confusing that comment about Germany's gun control helping the Holocaust happen. That's ridiculous.
