I'm almost embarrassed to say that I had to use every continue I had to beat this game again I honestly don't remember this game being that difficult on Jedi, but there were times in the first level where I felt like throwing my controller out the window.

And the Han levels are brutal. You die, you lose your gun power ups, and you;ll die again and again. One of those games where you need to be perfect on some levels or you are toast. Still, it's a great game, but yeesh, it's one tough sonovagun.

It's always nice to have plenty of grenades handy.

1/12: Kirby's Adventure (NES)
1/20: Injustice: Gods Among US (WiiU)
1/25: Super Mario 3D World (WiiU)
1/29: Metroid Fusion (GBA)
1/30: Metroid II: The Return of Samus (GB)
2/8: Metroid Zero Mission (GBA)
2/23: Lego Batman 2: DC Super Heroes (WiiU)
3/9: Megaman Zero (DS)
3/14: Megaman Battle Network (GBA)
3/19: Star Fox 64 3D (3DS)
3/23: Megaman 6 (NES)

Megaman 6 is a game that I feel was stuck with an unfair reputation. Usually people describe the blue bomber's farewell to the NES as derivative and uninspired. It's the Megaman game that I admittedly have the least experience with so I decided to download it onto the 3DS and give it a play through for the first time in a few years. This time, instead of rushing through it as part of my frequent marathon of Megaman games, I played it in isolation from the rest of the series and found myself thinking about it much more critically than usual.

Truth is, I think Megaman 6 is pretty fun. In my mind it is paired with Megaman 5, the same way Megaman 2 and 3 are thematically connected. In that context, Megaman 6 is hardly boring or derivative. Capcom's decision to eschew Rush's traditional role in favor of the Jet Pack and Power armors alone informed level design and resulted in stages the likes of which never showed up again - in particular, I am thinking of some of the later Wily stages where you literally have to jump toward the spikes below, triggering the jet pack at a particular moment to sling shot around to the opening beneath the platform you leapt from. The obstacles in Megaman 6 could never be solved with Rush Jet or Coil (excepting, perhaps, the broken implementation of Rush Jet in Megaman 3) and for a grizzled Megaman veteran such as myself, having to pause and consider my next move is a nice change of pace.

The sound track is, taken as a whole, probably one of the strongest of the entire series. Now, individually the songs don't quite rank with the greats. Megaman 3's Snake Man and Megaman 2's Wily Stage 1 wipe the floor with any track Megaman 6 has to offer - but there are no duds whatsoever and I frequently paused to raise the volume.

If Megaman 6 has any real flaw, it's got to be in the boss design and implementation. Megaman 6's bosses are almost pathetically easy - a situation that escalates out of hand come the Wily stages. I had so many energy tanks leftover by the time the credits rolled that I could have opened up a store and used the proceeds to finance Roll's college education. Ironically, Megaman 6 features this really neat effect where the light dims and flickers as a Robot Master enters with ominous music - and then you curb stomp their ass. Oh well. To refer to my earlier praise, at least the great level design is there to mitigate this problem.

Even though I didn't mean to look this deeply into Megaman 6, I'm glad I did. It's always been the black sheep of my favorite game series of all time and it was surprising to realize how poorly I understood it, how influenced I had been by the general consensus. It won't be toppling Megaman 3, Megaman 8, or Megaman V any time soon but it might make it into my rotation more frequently.
Maybe now Nintendo will acknowledge Metroid has a fanbase?

I didn't think any Mega Man game got hate until X7...

I'm not big on Megaman 7 or 8 myself. I think Megaman & Bass is a lot better than both.

I'm with Flake though in that a lot of people seem to pass on Megaman 6 or think it's forgettable, but I've always loved it. Graphically it's pretty amazing too and similar to Megaman 5, the bosses definitely started looking more complicated and diverse.

Mr. X was a little lazy though, haha.

I especially enjoy the Saturn version. So many enemies on screen!

I beat championship mode with the '85 Bears, something I do at least once a year. Madden '94 is probably my favorite football game ever made. The latest Madden I own is Madden 2010 and it looks fantastic, but for some reason I have more fun when playing '94. It "feels" more like actual football, if that makes sense.

No kidding.

*Holy Crap! MLHockey is $93.00 on amazon*

NHL '94 on the Sega CD is one of my all time favorite games. NHL 2002 and '94 are by far my favorite two hockey games. Once NH[quote]L 2014 drops in price, I'm all over it for the revamped '94 bonus game.
