Yo, Duke's is also REAL mayo, don't be lumping that in with the abomination known as Miracle Whip.

When I first moved to NC it was "Duke's or get out!". That stuff tastes JUST LIKE Miracle Whip. They both have that citrony tasting tang to it that gets in the way of the smooth flavor.

Duke's is fine on sandwiches, but not for cooking or by itself. And yes, I have eaten spoonfuls of nothing but Hellmann's Real mayonnaise.

Mayonnaise sandwiches on white bread... mmmm.

To each his own, I reckon. No knock on Hellmann's though, just a born and bred Duke's boy here.

I hear ya. And at least in the Piedmont area of NC, there's a bit of Southern Pride related to eating Duke's Mayonnaise. Hellmann's is kind of the "Yankee Mayo".

It's just past 8am, and I'm already looking forward to dinner: Slaw Dogs. You cook both the dogs and buns in a layer of melted butter, top with a homemade slaw, and that is it. Simple and oh so delicious.

French onion soup is awesome.

Waking up to have your entire house stink of onions isn't so good.

Boar's Head stuff at QFC is pretty dang good too. Is it a cart or something?

No, it's a local grocery store that has those Boar's Head hotdogs.

And if your store has Boar's Head deli meats, they'll more than likely personally order the franks for you.

My French onion soup in a bread bowl has an odd resemblance to the sarlacc pit.

Cobb salad tonight, no salad dressing. Any salad that is properly topped is usually ruined by dressing. Don't get me wrong, I enjoy making vinaigrettes but when you have blue cheese, homemade croutons, tomatoes, bacon, hard boiled egg, grilled chicken, shallots, and freshly ground pepper on a mix if greens, that's enough (Not really as I also throw in anchovies with capers). Dressing masks all those flavors coming together.

But any bagged salad is getting a douse of a dressing from me. That stuff tastes like preservatives although it's "Ready to eat!". Rinse and invest in a salad spinner.

@Luke re: salad

Do you know of any way to keep salad greens fresh for longer? We usually like to buy three-packs of romaine, but often some hearts start to go bad by the time we get around to using them. Sometimes we can just chuck the outer leaves after they wilt, but then others we have to trash the whole thing (and I HATE wasting food).

As soon as I get home with fresh greens, I rinse them thoroughly, given them a spin, wrap the leaves in a few paper towels, and place it in a gallon sized zip loc bag. Lasts for about a week.

Truth.

My take on this: Just put the good stuff in the salad, and you'll never need dressing.

I like to make a salad without lettuce. That stuff is mostly roughage to me. It just takes up space and tastes like water.

I start with fresh baby spinach, bell peppers, and cucumber slices. I add onions or scallions. Then I add granola, raisins, or grapes. Finally some fresh ground pepper and a pinch of salt complete the salad. No dressing needed.

And it is appalling what has happened to Caesar salad. I haven't been to a restaurant in over fifteen years that makes a proper Caesar salad. It needs to be prepared table side, full romaine leaves, and the dressing better contain a raw egg and anchovies.
