didn't you get a Neo Geo X and a Retron 5 at launch?
Hahahaha you are correct on both counts. I pre-ordered both. Hilarious that you remembered that.

So I guess I can afford emulators at launch, but not consoles.

MrPopo wrote:For me it was the Wii. Prior to that every console had been gotten as a holiday gift, which was exciting, but not quite the same as getting something at launch. For the Wii I camped out in a Meijer for 24 hours before the launch with six other guys (their total allotment). We borrowed one of the TVs in the electronics department and hooked up a Gamecube for Smash and then watched Serenity.
Did you steal my Wii release story? Because that is literally what we did. Some friends of mine and I came in and got to sit at their furniture section with bean bag chairs and some tables set up for us. We got a mean game of monopoly going and later was allowed to set up a TV and a modded Xbox which we played games for the rest of the day. It was pretty amazing! Plus it was buy a Wii-mote get a nunchuk free. Was truly awesome.

Well, you don't have to buy it you just have to be most excited for it. I never got an N64 until 2007.

I can't remember why I decided to get a psx instead of N64 although I would say N64 is my favorite console overall(or snes).

I have never bought a console at launch, despite easily having the finances to do so. I don't do it because inevitably there's going to be a better revision of the console a few years down the road, and I'd rather only buy the console once, preferably in its final form. On the downside this means that I'm often gaming a generation behind everyone else console-wise, but on the upside by the time I buy the console its library is dramatically discounted and I can buy games for it far cheaper than they would have been upon release.

On the other hand, I almost always buy handheld systems as soon as they are released. I can't really explain why except that perhaps I'm a bit of a handheld junkie. Especially handheld JRPGs... it still blows my mind that I can hold something like Dragon Quest IX and all the hardware that it needs to play in my hands.

Those Sony medical monitors with like 10000 hook-ups in the back..... My wife uses a few at work. I told her to take one if they ever "upgrade" and bring it home.

I told her to "just steal one."

Didn't go over well.

N64, because it was the first console i actually remember being excited for before hand, i had the SNES first but was too young to remember getting it and it wasnt something that was hyped up.

I remember my parents put the N64 in like a giant 27+ inch CRT box, then put a bunch of other box's around it and then wrapped the CRT box, so me and my brother had to dig through it to find the N64.

First games for N64 were Super Mario 64, Killer Instinct Gold, and Star Wars: Shadows of the Empire.

My aunt did this for my first PS1.

Turned out it was broken and couldn't read memory cards, which I didn't find out until several months later when we bought one...

I have always either waited until well after launch to buy a console, or the few close to launch that I bought didn't end up being to exciting. :P
