You're doing it wrong.
But seriously, I'm pretty sure I've cleared Cross in 20-30 hours each time without guides and I've always been obsessive about side quests, items, collecting, etc in JRPG's. Maybe it is a little longer than Trigger, but still not that long compared to most PSX JRPG's.
What RPG are you playing right now?

So I started this back in January, played an hour, and then stopped to spend time on other things. I am now closer to three hours in after picking it back up this week and am still enjoying it a good deal and hope to devote some time to playing through to the end over the next week or two. About how long is an initial run through (with no guide)? Is there any disadvantage to increasing the battle speed option?
I was playing the DS version and have put it down for a couple of weeks. Where are you at in the game? I was in the future (2099?) and met "Father Time" so I have the option of going to any time period now. I'm supposed to go back to my original era (1099?) and battle these fiends.
I just started playing Mario & Luigi - Bowser Inside Story and am liking it so far. I really should finish M & L Superstar Saga (stopped playing it about 8-9 months ago). I was at the final battle and just couldn't beat the boss after a handful of times. I should give in and look at a guide so I can just wrap it up.
On the Wii, I started playing Legend of Zelda - Ocarina of Time. I'm trying to imagine myself as a young kid who has Link to the Past on the SNES and has been waiting a long time for the next Zelda console game so that I can appreciate OOT's place in time. I'm still trying to get used to the classic controller in the N64 configuration. I have trouble in the item subscreen where I seem to be pressing the wrong button and getting the save prompt. I've debated stopping the VC game and starting it on the N64 with the original controller. I think I'll stick it out a bit longer. I was able to master the stylus controls on Super Mario 64 DS. Ditto for Phantom Hourglass & Spirit Tracks.
So I have a lot of pokers in the fire. I tend to spend most of my limited time on the DS or the PSP so I'm trying to use the console more. There is something to be said for watching it on the big screen and using the amplifier/speakers.

I just got to the future (?), defeated a robot, and then found out that I need to go to some dome/lab place (and pick up a bike along the way). I guess you are a bit farther ahead.

I'm stuck on the giant bat boss. That bastard is hard to hit!
Man that guy sucks. Here's what I did. Stick to the upper corners and then swing your guy down and below the crowd of bats when he is very close to you and back to the other corner. When you see that red slash from him turning solid swing back and hit him, then repeat for about 5 minutes and you'll get him.

I don't know why, but I really couldn't get into either of the Chrono games. I've tried both of them from the beginning multiple times, but they just don't click with me in any way. I mean, the production values are through the roof on all fronts for both games (visuals, audio, gameplay), there's no arguing that, but they never give me that feeling of wanting to come back for more that an RPG simply has to give.
I'm also not a fan of a silent protagonist at all, so that doesn't help. I can't get around thinking it's just a lazy move, even when done well like in the Shining games.
I figured out the samples were coming out a little wonky because of the emulator I was using. I listened to some of the songs elsewhere and found that the samples are just fine (very good, actually).
Compositionally though, I thought it was great from the start. Definitely on par with some of the other great scores on the SNES.

Kind of interesting you liked Xenogears but not the Chrono games, since they were made by the same teams and I thought I could personally see a lot of similarities in terms of pacing, or how they played out. I dunno, but yeah they're incredibly different anyways.

I'm working on Valkyria Chronicles 2 at the moment. Not quite as enjoyable as the first one in my opinion. I really do wish the AI was better. So far the only challenge for me was when an unkillable boss ran around the stage one-shotting all my units for lols. And even then I beat that stage on the first try (albeit with a ranking of D).
I recently acquired Lunar SSSC and Lunar 2 EBC so I'll be playing those next.

I beat the first episode of FFIV After Years last night, clocked in at just under 4 hours. Dammit, I really like this game a lot.
Re: What RPG are you playing right now?
I just picked up FFIV in the Amazon Gold Box event on Wednesday. Looking forward to playing!
