Ive still not beaten Deus Ex, despite starting it a dozen times and owning it three different ways. I think I am going to have to play it with the coop mod if I am ever going to actually finish it.

I haven't played the original Deus Ex in years, but back in the day I didn't wind up getting into it until the third or fourth time I started it.

Then I was completely hooked and played it every chance I got until I finished it.

I started Deus Ex a few weeks ago, but it hasn't sucked me in yet.

Last time I played it I got to Hell's Kitchen, but that was a while ago.

I think part of it has to do with the weapons. I don't care for much of what I can find early on: the pepper gun I could never figure out, the stun prod just felt iffy, I disliked the time to wait for a stealth dart, and without the upgrades, the stealth pistol was too inaccurate for me to want to stick with (though after a few accuracy upgrades and boosts to my pistol skill, it works quite well.

But then I found my bread and butter in Hell's Kitchen: shotguns. Once I had a sawed-off, I quickly reverted to my workhorse, and the riot shotgun makes me giggle like a schoolgirl. Sure, I keep a sniper rifle around because it's come in handy for setting off traps against groups, because I have a silencer on it, and because sometimes I need to really reach out and touch someone. Plus, it uses the same skill. But the shotgun is what really got me into the action.

You ever see The Expendables? You remember Terry Crews walking down that hallway, laughing, his guns blazing? Yeah, that's how I play Deus Ex.

And that's part of what makes Deus Ex so great. You can play it like that, or you can be a stealthy guy who kills almost no one.

So some tips for these weapons you mentioned:
  • The pepper gun is pretty terrible in the base game. Essentially it's a gas grenade, but the gas particle disappears almost immediately, so the enemies don't stay stunned. It was made much more viable in Shifter, but I think it's still pretty bad there.
  • The stun prod feels wonky but it actually works just like all the other melee weapons. Each melee weapon does a certain amount of damage, and once you exceed the health of the enemy that enemy dies or is knocked out depending on if your weapon is lethal or not. This damage is location specific, so hitting in the head does more damage, and hitting from behind with a melee weapon is an automatic "death" (at least against most enemies). The stun prod has the added benefit that if you don't kill your enemy with it they are stunned for a second or so. So you can do things like prod them in the face, then quickly go around the back and knock them out.
  • The tranq darts do initial damage (like the regular dart or a pistol round) and then do damage over time. When either the initial damage or the damage over time wipes out the enemy health they get knocked out. The trick is that just like any other projectile you do far more damage if you hit people in the head. Once you get a bit of pistol skill you can knock out enemies with one shot by landing head shots.
  • Yeah, the stealth pistol is best used as a mini sniper rifle in the early game. Its damage is small so you really need to aim for headshots, but until you get enough pistol skill you can't do that without using it sniper-style. Later on in the game you can use it as a sidearm if your mouse aim is good.

That's cool, but admittedly since the non-stealth pistol did more damage, I just got used to running up behind people and putting a pistol round in their heads as they turned around. Now the grenades...I've had some fun with those, so I keep a few EMP, gas, and scramblers on hand at any time. Unfortunately I'm out of LAMs.

You know what would have been nice? A permanent safehouse. With some kind of stash.

How does the PS2 version of Deus Ex compare to its PC counterpart? I would like to play through the game at some point, but I am much more likely to do so on a console.

I primarily used the good vibrosword or whatever it was that you get in Hong Kong. Sneaking around and ambushing enemies one at a time.

The Assault Shotgun was exactly what he used in the movie. I immediately thought Deus Ex  The specialty rounds will be good for it later in the game.

But that is the best part. There's no one weapon/strategy/whatever that fits everyone who plays it. You can use the prod and darts and just hack every camera/ATM in the game, or just use the GEP gun and LAMs and blow everything up.

What I did the first time was find out which NPCs could be killed and which ones would raise alarms (UNATCO for example) and then pile all their bodies in one spot. It's real fun to do in the Free Hospital in New York too
