I like Sonic 1 a whole lot but I also recognize that its quality falls off tremendously once you get the Labyrinth zone.

Sonic CD is a very different game from any of the others, especially 2. Keeping momentum requires absolute memorization of a level and it's understandable why that is so frustrating for a lot of people. It's pretty hard to be bad at Sonic 2. It's very easy to become angry with Sonic CD's quirks. There's a whole lot more going on in that game compared to the others too.

And yet, if you can take the time to learn what the game wants you to learn I think you'll find you enjoy the game a whole lot. It's way more exploration based than 2 or 3&K and, in my opinion, feels like a more natural progression of what the original Sonic was trying to pull off.

As nostalgia wears off a bit I'm also more understanding of the people who don't like 3&K that much. For every moment of brilliance that game has there's 15 minutes of Sandopolis. There's that stupid "puzzle" in Carnival Night Zone and also a really cool sense of progression and story during a time when platformers weren't exactly known for that sort of thing. It's a mixed bag in all honesty but it's still the Sonic game I gravitate towards most.

Also. THAT MUSIC

See I disagree about what "Sonic" was trying to pull off. Should Sonic be about constant stopping, jumping up and down to platforms, meandering around exploring tiered levels for hidden items? Or should Sonic be about hauling ass blast processing furious pixels blurring past the screen wam bam Dr. Robotnik's face is pounded land on the button let the animals be free? I choose the latter, hence I find Sonic CD to be ill suited to what Sonic means to me.

Sega USA definitely seemed to push the speed aspect in marketing. And I certainly don't disagree that is what Sonic became about starting with 2, which was developed by an American team I believe. However, Sonic CD plays much more like Sonic 1 than anything else in that it is quite a bit slower and real speed can only be achieved with perfectionist play.

The thing that throws me off when I try to play Sonic CD is how there's a move you can do using the spindash button presses that isn't the spindash.

Yeah the standing dash thing. Pressing up and dash. I honestly don't know why they did that, as it achieves the same thing as a spindash, but leaves you vulnerable to enemies. I just looks cooler.

I used to think that "zero suit Samus" meant "naked Samus."

Very simple Photoshop skills employed means it actually does.
