2011 really was a rather sucky year. I'd say the best movie was either Kung Fu Panda 2 or The Muppets, and that's sad.

Cabin is 2012.noiseredux wrote:@Luke: Movie of the Year is Cabin in the Woods. And you know this man.
Cabin/Raid/Marvel's The Avengers are too close to call.

I don't like horror or romance movies, so some of the ones you may have enjoyed fall flat for me. Outside of those genres is there anything I'm failing to consider?dsheinem wrote:your avatar fully conveys my response to your postBoringSupreez wrote:2011 really was a rather sucky year. Re: What was the last movie you've seen?
Did you see any of the Academy Award or Golden Globe best picture nominees? Those are never "definitive" lists of the best pictures of the year and they tend to ignore much of the action/sci-fi/horror genres, but they are a good place to start. The Artist and Hugo were both amazing, I thought. Midnight in Paris and War Horse were both pretty good, too.BoringSupreez wrote:I don't like horror or romance movies, so some of the ones you may have enjoyed fall flat for me. I won't put words in your mouth, but will say it seems you are saying quality trumps quantity. That's very not you. Yes, THE ARTIST is an achievement that everyone should have a mind opened enough to give it a watch. Does it make up for the shit fest that was 2011, nerp.dsheinem wrote:
2011 was a pretty decent year for films, actually. I have seen you praise Best Picture The Artist, but all of the Academy awards for best picture - with the exception of Extremely Loud and Incredibly Boring were much better than Attack the Block.
If Attack of the Block, The Muppets, or Bridesmaids were anywhere near your top five for last year - or any year - you just need to watch better movies
I'm not saying that the good doesn't outweigh the bad most years, simply 2011 wasn't the best year for cinematography. I mean, look at 2004:
Team America: World Police
Shaun of the Dead
Spartan
Closer
Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind
The Incredibles
Kill Bill: Volume 2
Sideways
Before Sunset
I'll Sleep When I'm Dead
Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy
Bright Young Things
Downfall
Vera Drake
Birth
Dogville
Infernal Affairs
Million Dollar Baby
Shrek 2
The Motorcycle Diaries
Maria Full of Grace
Hotel Rwanda
Shaolin Soccer
Man On Fire
The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou
Saved!
Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban
Ray
Spider-Man 2
The Bourne Supremacy
The Phantom of the Opera
Hero
The Dreamers
Lemony Snicket's A Series of Unfortunate Events
The Passion of the Christ
Goodbye, Lenin!
Garden State
Napoleon Dynamite
De-Lovely
The Machinist
Mean Girls
Hellboy
The Aviator
Intermission
Carandiru
Young Adam
The Yes Men
Dawn of the Dead
Finding Neverland
Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow
Zatoichi
Undertow
Dodgeball: A True Underdog Story
The Terminal

Exorcist: The Beginning
Taking Lives
2011, at large, was a bad year for movies.
Re: What was the last movie you've seen?
Fair enough, I guess I think that you judge a year of films based on the quality of its best films, not the quantity of decent films. Both are defensible positions.Luke wrote:I won't put words in your mouth, but will say it seems you are saying quality trumps quantity. That's very not you. Sometimes I can't believe how many great movies were released in only one year. 2011 wasn't one of those years.dsheinem wrote:

And you are 100% on point. I'm basing on year/writing/quality...Attack the block wouldn't make my 2012 top five list list.
Jeez Duder. You are starting to make me all sad about 2011. When I think about it in "I'm gonna buy this blu-ray special edition/Criterion" I'll probably buy three or four movies from 2011.
Re: What was the last movie you've seen?
BOURNE AGAIN
I like my title better.
It's exactly what you would expect, with less shaky cam (save for a motorcycle race that is very Cloverfield). Renner delivers a great performance, in a movie that is overall pretty good, but at the same time the story is basically pointless.
Spoilers!

Re: What was the last movie you've seen?
Elite squad 2.
I thought it was an action movie. it's not. There's some decent action scenes, but it's a drama. A pretty good one. I did feel that there was too much narration. I would have preferred a slightly more simplified story that progressed more through dialogue than the complicated story that required description to explain everything that happened (there was even narration over the action scenes!). The ending was implausible, like they hit their running time and had to wrap everything up in two minutes. Woth seeing if you like stories about corruption. . . It takes place in brazil but mirrors a lot of American issues.
